I have never seen Geb/Kenny B/El G/Tergat etc behave like this, so I guess they must be a bunch of lazy bastards.

That girl is Danielle Tauro and if you go back and read the forum you will realize she has a medical condition. Even not at her best Danielle Tauro is still running some decent times. I can't gurantee it but I'm pretty sure Taur is under medical care and i feel she will rebound just as Nicole Blood did. Everyone was counting out Blood and she has rebounded quite nicely. Once healthy Tauro will do the same thing and run some amazing times to match her talents.

It was a great race and now looking back at the video it was pretty funny but I personally did not fall out because I was being a, "drama queen."
OK, you weren't being a drama queen exactly, but you saw everyone else collapsed on the ground, so at least subconsciously you thought: 'I don't want people to think I didn't work as hard as others, so.... down I go. Lay on my back....gasp for air like I might never get up.' Right? I mean, we are all victims of group-think, I just think young women might even be more so sometimes.
I'm sorry, but there was absolutley no reason for dozens of girls to be laid out all over the place on the ground like they had all been shot, when it was a perfect day, when course records were set left and right, and it was only 6k. Most men finish marathons in 90 degree weather and don't act like that.

And most men are not grabbed and yanked almost off their feet immediately by overzealous finish chute workers. I have never seen that sort of aggressive handling before.
Notice the guy with the gloves and black jacket. He is bouncing up and down in anticipation of "rescuing" the runners even before they main wave starts coming in.

Wow, that's news to me...you guys must be really tough. But from what I've heard, there was a fair amount of carnage around (or short of) the finish line of the Chicago marathon, when the temps were somewhat less than 90.
A bunch of drama kings, I guess.
(I appreciate the posts from the women who were actually there at pre-nat's - congrats to those of you who pr'd.)
Here are the premises that I'm working under: These ladies are athletes. These ladies are capable of walking through the chute after a hard effort. I blame the finish line management of the race more than I blame the runners. When chute volunteers grab them and drag them to the side it is very difficult for them to walk.I would like to take credit for my "genius plan" of finish line management but it has been in existence for a lot longer than I've been around, even longer than there have been chip timing, if you can imaging that.I do not believe that having a bunch of bodies lying around the finish area is good for the athletes or the sport. I must admit though, to having a good laugh at the sheer magnitude of the carnage. The reason I thought it was funny is because I know that it was not life threatening and unnecessary. What about all the penguins out there that are going to witness this mess and start the drum beat of how bad running is for you, potentially depriving America of its next Deena. The thing that I don’t like is all these posters questioning, not unreasonably so given the video footage, the intent of the runners, i.e., monkey see, monkey do. It’s more like chute Nazi see, chute Nazi do. Once the “body snatchers” got going there was no stopping them. If the bodysnatchers were so "outstanding" with the girls why were they nonexistent for the guys? I saw a couple of guys that they could have rescued but instead seemed show a little constraint and let them move down the line under their own power.ISU fix this thing before nationals, please. As for the picture request I’m hoping that you need it to assess my ability to take down an out of control chute Nazi. Suffice it to say that even though I’m wiry I’ve always been able to fend for myself in times of need. Now if you wanted the picture for some other reason, like say, pent up feelings you may be hiding or certain yearnings that have you confused that could qualify as a time of need.

There would have been a complete bottleneck extending out into the course under your genius plan. ISU has a wide finish area- it worked beautifully. 55 degrees- cloudy, low humidity.

October 13th, 2007. The NCAA Women's Pre Nats White Race. A day which will live in infamy...
Did they ever catch the finish line sniper?
Suzy Favor Hamilton and Alan Webb should get checked out too.
Fix what? They executed perfectly milquetoast!
I applaud ISU. You, with absolutely 0 experience in a finish chute, know nothing of the consequences of what would happen if the race backed up into the course. You have no idea of the logistics demanded by the championship committee. Do you have any idea of what would happen if the chute workers would have waited for those athletes to move themselves? Are you so absolutely stupid as to compare a marathon to a xc race?
Wow all that pent up anger. You must have been one of those chute Nazi’s.My contention is that the Pre-Nats finish line management is broken because there is no need for all those bodies lying about. So if it’s broken, then it needs to be fixed. It appears that your contention is that it is perfectly normal for a woman’s cross country race to result in bodies strewn about like a war zone. It is with this that I respectively disagree. So let’s get to the bottom of all this. Are you implying that only Pre-Nats has ever held a cross country race where lots of runners finish within seconds of each other?I've been in, let's see 4 years HS xc plus 4 years college xc (div 1) and then to a lesser extent, 4 years post collegiate xc (only a few a year though). In all those years, never once did a single cross country race back up onto the course. Yes there were some scrums just across the finish line but nothing like the terror that you describe. Why is it such a logistical nightmare at ISU versus all the thousands of xc races that preceded it? What makes ISU so different from all the other xc races? The only thing that I can see that is any different is chip timing. Maybe, just maybe, because there is no need for chutes to properly sort the order of finish they don't think that they need them. My contention is that they do need them. They need them because the alternative is to go out and "save" the women from themselves. So take a deep breath, take your medication and let me know if you see where I'm going with all this. If you've ever been in a chute system, which it appears that you have not, then I can tell you that they never "waited for those athletes to move themselves." They actively helped you navigate the chute, when it fills or you get mr wobbly legs then they close it off and start to fill the next. What is this talk of comparing a marathon to xc? Are you so out of your mind with anger and rage that someone would question the finish line management at ISU that you are confusing threads or are you always this way? I won't make the argument that maybe you’re just dense because I think that you're doing fine all by yourself and I’d like not to sink to your level (although I must admit to questioning your sexuality in the previous post – sorry about that, I’m sure you’re all man). So, in conclusion, women can walk after they finish a race, they don’t need you to grab and drag, what happened in the white race was an embarrassment to our sport, soooooo…you’re not going to like this…FIX IT!

Man, that ending was better than the ending fight scene in 300. bravo!
I love the way the meet was ran and I ran my buns off. It was funny later when i think about how some guy grabbed me and I didn't know who it was or where he came from. I was so tired I just appreciated the gentlemanship of it all. Hopefully some day when I get married someone will wisk me off my feet and take me by surprise the same way.
It was a lot of fun after I got my air back.
enjoyed the video, good stuff. It seems as though the chute people were paid piecemeal as to how many girls they hauled away. Gotta make my quota.
Either that or it was staffed by a bunch of dirty old men.
What occurred in the finish area during the end of this race was outrageous and the race officials are completely to blame. I ran 12 seasons of cross and track in college and I have never seen anything like what occurred at pre-nats. These women are experienced racers who have made it through the chute 100s of times without incident or assistance. Probably 98 percent of them were fine to make it through the finish area on their own.
The problems started when this group officials started grabbing women as they finished. I saw several officials physically pick women up with a bear hug and carry them away. The women were winded, but were still fine to move on their own--albeit slowly through the finish area. If this occurred on the street these men would be charged with assault. Show me another sport where the officials can touch athletes without punishment. The NCAA should review what occurred at the meet and a rule should be considered that an official can not touch an athlete unless the athlete is unable to care for him/herself. This was not the case here except perhaps for the University of Washington woman who collapsed. Of course, the women were tired, but in every other race I have ever seen the athletes, men or women, have made it through the finish area with minumum assitance. This race should have been no different except for the overzealous actions of the finish area officials. What occurred was offensive and inappropriate and did a dis-service to a great group of athletes.
figured out that the girl who got dragged across the grass at the finish is Lauryn Saylor of University of Washington. she was def. no slouch in highschool 2:15 4:55 10:35 runner from Buchanan HS in California.
I tend to agree with the finish line volunteers being to blame in this case. If you watch closely, there is a girl in green towards the end of the video that if walking just fine through the chute. Out of nowhere, a trainer comes in and fireman lifts here over to the side. These volunteers had good intentions, but I think they took them a little too literally. Let the girls walk through the chute. It was like they expected them to keep running through the chute.
they weren't officials dumbass, it was hilarious, quit being a bitch
