For me it would have to be Angel Martinez, Bryan Dameworth or Brenden Heffernen for #1.

would a moderator please delete this ridiculous post.
Jayhawk " comments work for me"!
Ryun easily #1. Lindgren easily #2. You could argue between Pre, Virgin, Webb, and Chapa as to #3.
Ryun made an Olympic team before his senior year of high school. Lindgren beat the Russians at 10K before his senior year which for you youngsters with no appreciation of the history of this sport would be like Ritz beating Geb at 10K before his senior year in high school.[/quote]
....and here is why Virgin belongs
Virgin had a pretty good outdoor season his senior year in high school: list below....
PS: His Junior year was a lot of the same thing!..... If a HS distance runner did this today he would be on ESPN! Hell!.... he has more sub 9's then all the High Schoolers combined this year(2007)!

All-time IL boys hs 1600 list
#4 4:04.1c Craig Virgin '73 - Lebanon. was 4:05.5 mile win at Top Ten meet at Thornridge HS.
Jr, '72 state mile champ in 4:09.2
Sr, state mile 2nd in 4:12.2 after state 2-mile win and 5th in Freedom mile in 4:06.1
All-time IL boys hs 3200 list
#1 8:37.9c Craig Virgin '73 - Lebanon. was 8:40.9 2-mile to win International Prep Invitational (IPI).
Fr, '70 state 2-mile 7th in 9:31.9 for new national freshman and age-14 records.
So, '71 state 2-mile 2nd in 8:57.4 for new national soph & age-15 records & '70 state XC 6th.

Lindgren, without a doubt.
Kevin Sullavin comes to mind. Does he still hold the 800m age group record for 13(?) year olds at 1:53?
He had some impressive races, including a few sub-3:40 1500m.
Do we count Canadians in this thread? Greg Andersen would have kicked Ritz or Virgins asses in HS especially in 3K up and XC. Webb would have owned him in the mile but nothing longer. Lindgren would have given him a run for his money. Ryun was dominating but did he run longer than the mile? Sullivan was dominating as well and it would have been good to see him with more competition. Brannen was a good HS runner with a sub 4 mile but started running too late to be dominating to the extent that Anderson or Sully were.
My list would be
1. Lindgren
2. Andersen
3. Ryun
4. Sullivan
5. Webb
6. Virgin
7. Ritz
8. Rupp
9. Chapa
10. Brannen
Canadiens in the 13th grade should not count.
8:00 is great as a high schooler. Lots of other 19-year old freshman have done it.
Women - Mary Decker is obviously at the top of the list but don't forget the longest held HS record is held by Lynn Bjorklund, two time national senior women's CC champion while a junior and senior in HS plus national women's 3000 meter champion as a senior plus the record in the US-USSR dual meet following. Lynn also beat Mary in the junior CC championships as a sophomore.
National championships and Olympic team qualifiers should be where this discussion starts and ends. Mathias, Lindgren, Ryun all clear that bar.

sully ran 3:39 at the 1993 world junior championships (the summer between grade 12 and grade 13). so he was a much of a high schooler as webb was (not saying he is better, just the same time period). he was also 3rd in the world in that race!!!!
sorry, i meant 1992

It's amazing to me that anyone other than Ryun or Lindgren can be considered #1. He was on the U.S. Olympic team prior to his senior year in high school. His senior year he beat the reigning Olympic champion Peter Snell to win the national title at the mile. Lindgren is the only runner, period, on the North American continent that can boast similar credentials. Ryun's #1 to me because he set the American record for the mile his senior year in high school, beat Peter Snell and ran the ONLY sub 4 mile in a high school only competition to date. To consider anyone else #1 is retarded.
In high school, Nelson went by 3K in 7:58 in a 2 mile.
I was also told he ran a 4:10 1600m as a junior; I do know that he ran a 4:20 1600m as soph in dual meet, therefore it does not seem impossibe.
HA HA HA.....only a dumb canuck could come up with a list like that, having Anderson ahead of Ryun, and Sullivan ahead of Webb.

Charlie Sawyer...Saint Paul Central
Julio Meade
Andrew Jackson High School
Queens, New York
Julio's range ran from 60 yards to 2.5 miles at Van Cortlandt.
He ran the opening leg in the historic 2 mile relay record set in 1965. At Van Cortandt he ran in the 13:25 range. In high school he was faster than his teammate Vince Mathews and White Plains star Larry James.
Your appreciation for history is inaccurate. Lindgren won the 10,000m at the US-USSR meet in 1964, the year he graduated from high school. Not "before his senior year in high school."
