1) This becomes more commonplace as the growing number of 63-64’ HMers hit the roads earlier after struggling to win medals on the track (Gebrelesama, Ngetich, Eisa, Taye et al)
2) Caught Doping
3) It remains in its own class, and we don’t really know
I’d find 1) most likely as I think it’s a matter of IF not when for Ngetich to be running 2:11 herself and Gebreselama running 2:12. I’d say 2:11-2:12 will become like 2:01-2:02 on the men’s side.
So she was 8 minutes faster than the next woman finisher, which means it was essentially a time trial. It's insane. Often when people notch very fast times, they're driven to extremes by somebody pushing them. What's insane to me is that she drove herself to this time without that prod.

Did you see the video? I wouldn't call it a time trial, because she had 2 pace setters (looked like Ethiopians) shielding her and dragging her along. Not a solo effort. Still a great run.

It will be 1, and some of those runners will also fall under 2 (caught doping). See your comparison with "2:01-2:02 on the men's side".
It can't be 3 anymore, because we already had a 2:09 and a 2:11 from two other women - results that - cough cough - won't be DQ'd.
In Jonathan Gault's article, he reasons that a 2:10x marathon is not implausible for a runner capable of a 1:03x half marathon. The problem with this line of thinking is that it presupposes that a 1:03x half marathon by any woman is at all plausible.

If a 2:10 female marathon runner is doped - she will be - then a 63 min female HM runner will be doped. The former head of WADA says athletes today are getting away with their doping. He didn't give anyone a pass and especially the fastest in the sport.

You know why we're not reacting to this? I think its because we're just numb to it at this point. We were all reacting with cautious skepticism to Assefa's 2:11 insanity, no one wanted to be the first to REALLY call it out, and then while we're all still tip toeing around that bull, ruth drops her 2:09 and the world just exploded. And we know how that went.
This is just as stupid and ridiculous as Assefa's time in Berlin.
Also, dropping this at a 2nd tier marathon is an interesting choice. Little less scrutiny in Barcelona as opposed to doing this at Berlin or Tokyo or even Valencia.
I'm just done at this point. Yes, I still will watch the majors, yes I will still be here on the Lets run forum talking about races because I enjoy watching racing, but I don't care anymore, which is different from watching.
Waiting now for debut of the faster HM runner, Agnes
I love watching Agnes Ngetich compete and am a big fan of her aggression and front running on the roads and in xc (and the track too, really), BUT - didn't she just run herself into the ground in nyc ? Makes me think it's ok to be patient and wait for her marathon debut!
Plus, isn't it kind of bizarre that Gidey's 62:52 hasn't gotten a thrashing ? I feel some women may as well take the record closer to 62:00 before moving up. Who knows, we are only one revelatory Kiplimo-esque HM talent on the women's side before the record is like 61:30 and opens the door to 2:08 clockings.
I am not surprised that 62.52 still leads. Gidey was totally exhausted at the finish that day in front of YY
Please explain how the drugs only work for Africans?
How says they do? And why are all these posts getting deleted, but Rekrunner's personal insults remain?
I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of people who want to ban Kenya.
This EPO silliness has gone on too long on too long. I wish people would learn that there is no magic oxygen uptake plateau beyond one's own biological limits.
Since you know Basic Biology, I'm sure you can understand this?
