Most national championships don't hold much weight, the only exceptions are the Kenyan, Ethiopian, UK, and especially American championships. Just in the 1500m, there is a real argument to be made that the USATF 1500m final was more competitive than the 1500m final at the world championships.
The official part sure, odd phrasing by the OP. Would be better to have said he is the undisputed number 1 vs the official number 1.
BAHAHAHA, how many double standards can you make? Huh? Let me get this straight. Your argument is that the USA 1500m championships is the most competitive race 1500 race in the world. BUT the only way you could make that claim is conceding that Jonah Koech and even Ethan Strand ran impressive splits AND had better years in Hocker’s main event, the 1500m, than Hocker had. You won’t admit that though, because Hocker is of course the #1 distance runner in the world, but not the two guys who beat him…..at his own area championships
Well yeah they had more impressive splits and year than Cole Hocker in the 1500m (arguably, it's clear from the semi that Hocker peaked better than them but whatever) given their performance at USAs (trouncing Olympic bronze medalist Nuguse and 5th placer Kessler) while also beating the Olympic champ by closing 12 mid in a 3:30 flat race.
That's one of the most impressive 1500s of all time in my opinion, and was more impressive than the world championship final.
But just because they arguably had a better year than Hocker in the 1500 doesn't mean their year overall was better, Hocker won the 5000 world championships, or that they were in better shape than him in championship season for the 1500m.
He was the fastest 1500m runner in all likelihood, but they had a better season in the event.
If you had to bet your house, which bet would you take?
Kiplimo to win World XC
vs
Hocker to win the 1500 at Worlds
(We know which bet paid off in 2025.)
Dumb question. The 1500 is a much more competitive event than World XC. The 1500 is so competitive a 3:26 guy didn't medal at the last Olympics!
LOL.
World XC is so competitive that a 12:4x / 26:3x guy didn't medal there.
The fact is that Hocker won exactly one major race in 2025. And lost A LOT.
2025: Ran two Diamond Leagues, lost two Diamond Leagues. (2nd at Pre, 7th in Stockholm lol.) Lost the Millrose 3000m. (I don't care about GST, but if you want to be the king you need to win, and he LOST EVERY SINGLE GRAND SLAM HE RAN.)
In the same period Kiplimo has won Chicago and won World XC, also ran and won two HMs 58:29 and 56:42(WB) ... and lost exactly one race (second in the London Marathon).
In major races, Kiplimo wins more than he loses. Hocker loses more than he wins.
I do sense that your animus against Cole Hocker has blinded your objectivity.
Huh? Animus? Now you're just making things up.
While you tell stories, I deal in facts.
(I actually like Hocker. I was cheering like mad when he won the WC 5000 and the Millrose 2-mile.)
I hate to break it to you, but I follow the sport, like Hocker just fine, and by raw achievements on their respective resumes it is clear that:
London #2 + Chicago Win + World XC win + 56:42
is a more impressive 2025 than...
WC 5000 win and losing a lot other than that. 😂 (NO. OTHER. MAJOR. WINS.)
The fact is that is they both retired today, Kiplimo is already an athletics legend. Hocker would have exactly the lifetime global championship medal total as...Alberto Juantorena. Or Justin Gatlin. Or Kirani James.

You just can’t accept that your boy Kiplimo has no Olympic gold medal and Hocker does! It’s funny watching you cope post after post. You are incensed that Cole is an Olympic and World Athletics Champion and that your boy has the less prestigious XC golds. Win records don’t mean as much when you get smoked at the Olympics and world championships like Kiplimo has in the past. For any other sport the regular season win records don’t mean much if a losing team still wins the national championship. If an NFL team just barely makes the playoffs but ends up winning the Super Bowl, their losing record means nothing if they still bring home the trophy. Your take about Kiplimo is wrong.
I do sense that your animus against Cole Hocker has blinded your objectivity.

Pretty good! But not on Kiplimo's level.
Why do you keep conveniently leaving out that Cole won the Paris Olympics 1500 in most of your posts? It’s weird. You hate Cole so much that you are ignoring his greatest victory.
Kiplimo is not better than Hocker. They are different specialists for crying out loud. Kiplimo couldn’t run a 3:27 1500 if his life depended on it. That 56:42 has been wiped from the record books because Kiplimo needed to practically jump on the pace car to get it. He’s overrated. I bet if Cole trained for the 10k he would put the whoopin to Kiplimo and prove that he’s just another doped up East African. Kiplimo is a choke artist who blew it at three consecutive global outdoor track championships.
The question isn't about total career achievements. We're talking about who's #1 right now. It ain't the guy in the walking boot.
This.
The thread title says "#1 distance runner in the world right now."
If people want to do that by dominance in their best event, it is Kiplimo, hands-down. He is superlative in the half marathon, while Hocker has rarely even won an international 1500 or 5000. (Exactly ONE international win in each, and LOTS of losses.)
Compared with Hocker's 1500 or 5000 track record, Kiplimo is better in ANY of the HM, marathon, or XC.
If people want to do that by perceived overall running ability, the discipline that has ALWAYS pitted runners together from milers to marathoners has been XC. I would bet every dollar I have on Kiplimo over Hocker in the great leveling cauldron of XC.
Want to talk about times?
Kiplimo's PB are amazing over an incredible range: 7:26 / 12:40 / 26:33 / 56:42 / 2:02:23.
Hocker has good PBs within a relatively narrow band: TRASH 800 PB (1:45) / 3:27 / 7:23 / TRASH 5000 PB (12:57).
- Performance in best event(s): Kiplimo
- Winner across multiple events: Kiplimo
- Performance rating by PBs across events: Kiplimo

This is just silly. No rational person would take Kiplimo's championship medal collection over Hocker's.
Hocker's world championship win in Tokyo is a higher level accomplishment than Kiplimo's world XC win in Tally.
Hocker beat a more competitive field in Millrose than Kiplimo beat in Chicago.

You keep evading the question. Where is your boy’s Olympic gold or WC gold? Oh, that is right. HE DOESN'T HAVE ONE! He’s missing the pinnacle of the sport while Cole has two. Your boy is a choke artist extraordinaire. He couldn’t get the job done when he had the opportunity, while Cole the Hawk Man Hocker rose to the occasion and decimated his competition. All Kiplimo does is win races that nobody cares about. Whoopdie doo, he’s won one marathon major. Kelvin Kiptum was better and would have dominated Kiplimo to the point where Kiplimo would have went back to losing in the 10k. World XC is a joke now that only happens whatever year World Athletics wants it and always has watered down competition now. It’s a joke. It’s a meaningless grass race that no civilized nation on Earth cares about. Your boy Kiplimo is overrated and dumb. He can’t even answer simple interview questions without his handlers jumping to help him. You sound like you are as big a loser as your boy Kiplimo is.
For him to be the new Alpha, he has to rack up more wins this year and get at least under 3:27 and 3:44.
I just think if Cole can get a solid winning streak going this year, show he can win some races on the Diamond League circuit, run some fast times, and most importantly win against the best who is available; then that will be enough to make a case for being the new Alpha.
I agree with you there.
And by "more wins" you mean to say "more than one win."
Because that is exactly how many he had outdoors in 2025.
"Win some races on the Diamond League"?? Let's start with winning even one. His lifetime DL record is 5th (2022); 6th, 9th, 13th (2023), 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 7th (2024), 4th, 7th (2025) Zero for ten. Not very "alpha."
"Solid winning streak"?? Let's start with more than one win all year.
Here's his record for the year. (I'll omit the 800s, which were all not-even-close losses, placing 5th or 6th place.)

Cole The Hawk Man Hocker Cometh
Are you drunk? Embarrassing stuff here.
I can tell from your posts that Kiplimo speaks more languages that you.
The thread title says "right now." Let's talk about their last time out.
At World XC, Kiplimo dominated Aregawi, Ebenyo, Worku, Gressier, and certainly everything America and Europe had to offer.
At Millrose the same month, Hocker ducked the main event like every year and ran a slow 8:07 2-mile to beat Kerr, Beamish, Wightman, and a remaining field who have collectively accomplished nothing globally. (And no, beating up on Wightman running a soft time back in 8:20 is not impressive.)
Best distance runner match-up, event-by-event:
1500/mile - Hocker Oly Gold 2024, world #19 by time in 2025 5000 - Hocker WC Gold 2025, #26 by time in 2025, PBs Kiplimo 12:40 to Hocker 12:57 10,000 - Kiplimo PB 26:33 (26:48 road) HM - Kiplimo 56:42, world #1 by time in 2025, dominant globally in W vs L Marathon - Kiplimo 2:02:23, world #2 by time in 2025
Hocker loses more than he wins, every year. Kiplimo wins more than he loses.
Hocker beat a more competitive field in Millrose than Kiplimo beat in Chicago.
Hocker is #1.
LOL.
Millrose 2-mile win (8:07) vs Chicago marathon win (2:02:23).
The level of glazing to put Hocker on top in that comparison is simply comical. 😂
I said the competitiveness of the field. Compare the top 5 guys Hocker beat at Millrose to the top 5 guys Kiplimo beat in Chicago. The Millrose field was stronger.
Terrible analysis. Kiplimo can win his road races because the competition is weaker and he races so sporadically. He only raced 4 times last year. Racing so rarely enabled him to get ready to give a great effort every time out.
Hocker raced much more often against stronger and deeper competition. If Kiplimo returned to the track circuit, he'd lose most of his races too. In fact, he lost EVERY track race he entered in 2024. Not an Olympic Champion like King Cole Hocker!
Kiplimo's ego took such a beating from losing on the track in 2024, he retreated to the roads.

Hocker loses more than he wins, every year. Kiplimo wins more than he loses.
See the difference?
You can’t be serious. You must be trolling. He ducked the main event at Millrose? Cole faced the current WR holder at indoor 2 miles, the WC steeplechase champion, and a two time WC 1500m medalist. You must be out of your mind. I don’t think you believe even half the nonsense you spew.
For the second time, where’s your boy’s Olympic and WC gold medals? I think he is missing a couple things Hawkman has.
Glazing? You’ve glazed so much on Kiplimo that you have practically altered his skin color. Your Kiplimo bias is unfathomable.
My bias is toward WINNING RACES, which Kiplimo does more than he loses.
Kiplimo WINS much more than Hocker, who runs the 1500 and still only got one major win all year.
Hocker loses much, much more than he wins. Stomped in all five 1500s he finished in 2025; every time he started one he was third or worse.
GST x3, Pre DL, USATF: L, L, L, L, L.
That is not a "world #1" record.
Yeah but you are intentionally leaving out that he won USAs in the 5k, two indoor races early in 2025, and that he won his first heat of the 1500 in Tokyo before being unfairly DQd in the semis. So he in fact won 5 competitive races in 2025 if you include Tokyo.
Way to be dishonest to knock Hocker because you hate him for some reason.
Millrose 2-mile win (8:07) vs Chicago marathon win (2:02:23).

Do you realize how stupid it sounds to say Kiplimo's 2:02:23 is less good because he ran it solo for the last 12k?? 🤡
About Hocker's Millrose 2-mile, he didn't have the fortitude to go with a custom-paced race set up for him to attempt the 7:54 WR or even Fisher's 8:04 NR. (A 1500/5000 beating a 10k runner's time in the two-mile should be easy, if you think he's the world #1 distance runner. But he isn't.)
He ran 8:07, over 13 seconds slower than the custom pacing and wavelights he asked for. (Almost two seconds off per 400, wow.)
The field? Sorry, but if they can't put up a fight then what Kerr, Beamish and Wightman did once upon a time is irrelevant. (And no, sitting and kicking to 8:07 is not putting up a fight relevant to a conversation about who's the world #1.)
They all ran slower than Matt Tegenkamp's 8:07.07 NR from 2007. Kerr 8:07, Beamish 8:08, Wightman 8:20.
And nobody else in that field is slightly impressive -- not enough for their defeat to suggest the winner is the "world #1." 😂😂😂
Terrible analysis. Kiplimo can win his road races because the competition is weaker and he races so sporadically. He only raced 4 times last year. Racing so rarely enabled him to get ready to give a great effort every time out.

King Cole Hocker is #1.
Wow, you are proving you know nothing about the sport.
And you are proving my point: Hocker races a lot, and doesn't win much.
Of course a miler races more than a marathoner. This isn't "sporadic," genius.
In the past 12 months, Kiplimo ran 5 races: the Barcelona Half (February, win, 56:42), London Marathon (April, 2nd, 2:03), Buenos Aires Half (August, win, 58:29), Chicago Marathon (October, win, 2:02), World XC (January, win)
Kiplimo raced about every 2 months, and won 4 of 5 times out (2nd once). Including World XC, a WMM, and a WR.
Hocker does race a lot. 16 events in 2025 (not double-counting rounds.) Here's his 2025 record in finals:
Indoor: DNF, W, L, W (Wins at the Hokie Invitational and BU DMR Challenge)
Outdoor: GST: L, L, L, L, L, L (Never placed higher than 3rd) Diamond League: L, L (4th and 7th) USATF: L, W (3rd and 1st) WC: DQ, W
Sorry fanboys, this is not the record of the "world's best distance runner." 😂😂😂😂😂
It’s fair to say that Hocker is absolutely not the #1 distance runner in the world. Instead, he is among many great runners who have yet to make a mark like Jakob has. I hope Hocker puts up a fast Mile mark in JDL soon and wins the World Indoor double, if he does that he has made his mark clear for the season as the #1 guy.
