Lived in Boulder for a few years, and I have to admit that it was painfully disappointing. Now that I’ve left, the entire running community looks like a delusional cult to me. The running is pretty good, but there are plenty of other amazing places to train. The dating scene is abysmal. There is no diversity. There are very few attractive people. Outside of the university and the pro athletes who live there, there really aren’t any young people so it is very boring and isolating. The pro athletes can’t even afford to live in Boulder so they’re all stuck out in the suburbs (Funbarrel and Schlongmont). The OAC gym is located in a 1 star shopping center. I wish I could drag everyone out of that dump so they know what they’re missing out on.

If you can get access to the Air Force indoor 4-5 times a winter. I think Colorado Springs is way better than Boulder. For running, cost of living. Probably not dating, diversity or culture.

Boulder lives on a reputation that certainly exists firmly in the past, first the Frank Shorter era and then the Wetmore-Lear revival era. Now all you see is this on repeat:

Totally agree…I have lived overseas and the fact that US distance running seems to be primarily based in like 3-4 run-of-the-mill college towns is unhealthy for our sport, and it’s one reason why the US underperforms despite having a huge population. It brings little visibility and exposure to the public other than social media, and it isolates runners in fairly small insular overpriced communities. If there were inclusive, yet semi-serious running clubs in every U.S. city like there are in Europe or Australia, you’d probably see some studs jump out of the bushes and wipe the floor with most of the clubs in Boulder.
