The government shutdown isn’t about Democrats trying to give health care to illegal immigrants. It’s mainly caused by a budget fight over health care funding. Specifically, Democrats want to protect Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies and Medicaid funding, while Republicans oppose some of that spending.
Claims that Democrats shut down the government to fund health care for undocumented immigrants are false. Federal law already blocks undocumented immigrants from receiving those benefits.
Some Democrats (mostly in progressive states) have supported state-level or limited federal proposals to expand basic health coverage to undocumented residents. For example, emergency care or children’s programs.
Republicans then use those examples to argue that Democrats “want to give free health care to illegal immigrants,” even though those proposals aren’t part of the current federal shutdown debate.
Republicans are tying nearly every spending fight to border security and immigration ahead of 2026 midterms. This framing helps them argue that Democrats care more about “outsiders” than “American taxpayers,” even when that’s not supported by the actual budget language.
Couple of things here: Emergency Medicaid is already covered federally and is not in danger of being cut. It covers things like illegal immigrants coming here to give birth. If you eliminate birth right citizenship when both parents are illegal, you can reduce that expense by taking away that incentive. But you have to look a little deeper at how the states are funding the care for illegals. Typically it takes the form of a tax on medical providers, which basically means everyone else pays more for medical in order for illegals to get healthcare. It is way over budget in places like California and Illinois. Truth is charity like that shouldn’t be taking places when we have deficits. You don’t take out loans to give money to charity.

One thing here: This has absolutely nothing to do with the stalemate in Congress, it's just an attempt to pivot to an argument that isn't completely factually wrong.
Yes, New York gives Medicaid to illegals and Ohio doesn't. When the government gives billions of dollars to New York for Medicaid, that frees up state money in New York that can then be spent on illegals.

The shutdown is because the House passed a budget bill to continue spending at current levels and the Democrats are demanding 1.3 TRILLION in NEW spending....
Jeffries just said that the ACA is "unaffordable". I guess it is the UCA then. And this is the problem with government programs. They are too often ineffective and/or unsustainable.

That’s the essential point. The reason we are in this position is because we already outspend our revenue. The Dem’s solution: Spend some more.
