The officials making themselves the star of the show? Or was this justified?
Rojo, don't blame the officials because someone filed a protest. The officials are just doing their job. Honestly, some of your hot takes feel like *you're* trying to be the star of the show.
This is an asanine take....Just watching Rai Crash into hurdle 10 would have garnered mental attention from all the athletes behind him, it absolutely didn't impact just 1 athlete in the way your saying it would, so its crazy to say only the Nigerian was affected...

To disqualify an athlete just because they hit a hurdle is total lunacy. Gee, has that every happened before? Now if what you did caused something to happen to impede a neighboring runner, then they have no choice but to DQ the runner although it was accidental.
But some people here are suggestint that this distracted the concentration of another runner causing him to lose a fraction of a second and that should lead to disqualification is totally bonkers and is NOT what that rule is suggesting. The runner next to him was never impeded and that is the only standard that applies.

I just rewatched the video (including the slo-mo view) and it's crazy how little the Nigerian runner seems to be affected. You would think the hurdle being knocked that far off would mess up his approach, but he looks pretty much the same going over the last hurdle as he did over the last few hurdles before that.
Based on the rules as written, which are about whether or not there is "effect or obstruction" on another runner, I don't think this should be a DQ.
But I do think the rule is a little bit strange. Let's say Ezekiel Nathaniel had tripped over the last hurdle after it had been bumped out of position. In that case, I think you'd have to DQ Benjamin. But you'd never really know if Nathaniel would have tripped anyway--that happens all the time in the hurdles.
i am curious whether it was the coaches or the athletes who appealed. you can see where the official result "on the field" was DQ, which they would not have appealed as it benefitted them. rai appeals it and gets reinstated. they then appeal that appeal.
I believe that the federation representing athletes has to officially file any challenge or appeal.
Athletes can support or disagree with the decisions of their federation.
A federation will almost always act in the best interests of the federation.

Nice comment. In ethics, issues like some of those raised by this rule get called 'moral luck'. For example, your mind wanders while driving and you blow through a stop sign. If nobody happened to be crossing, you're fine. If someone did happen to be crossing, and they die, you go to jail.
22.6 All races shall be run in lanes and each athlete shall go over each hurdle and keep to their own lane throughout. Failure to do so will result in a disqualification, unless Rule 17.4 of the Technical Rules applies. In addition, an athlete shall be disqualified, if: 22.6.3 they directly or indirectly knock down or displace a hurdle in their or in another lane in such a manner that there is effect or obstruction upon any other athlete(s) in the race, and/or another Rule is also infringed.
Benjamin hit hurdle 10, and the hurdle hit the hurdle in Nathaniel's lane, displacing it.
USATF appealed very quickly and it was accepted very quickly. Benjamin is the champion.
lol
If Warholm had done that he would have been axed. You know why. 😝
True. The downvotes are hilarious, all from people who’d be screaming for Warholm’s head if he had done what Rai did.
