Jakob seems to want to win but he wants to do it his way. That means running a fast race to the maximum extent of his ability. His ideal race would be to run a personal record, also a world record, and of course that means he would win.
Sure he likes to win but it seems like winning is not the ultimate goal. Who knows he might be happy if he gives his best and runs a 3:25 1500, even if he finished second after being passed near the end.
Thus, when he loses, we often hear him say that it is because he did not run his best race. He likely knows what his best race has been and what it should and can be, is and is disappointed when he does not run it.
He knows this has not been a good build up to World's this year. He likely knows it is unlikely he will be able to run a race that approaches his maximum ability.
Can he be satisfied with a lesser final result that only reflects his best effort for his ability on the day?
You have to respect him for trying to show up and do the best he can, even if he knows he is not at his best,
