Kigali is an awesome place to run or bike that is extremely safe. It’s easy to look around at the poverty, although it’s quickly changing, and think it’s a dangerous craphole. Crime is non-existent and lookup their 2.4k track up a hill in town. Exercise is part of the culture there.
Kigali is far from the worst to run. I’m still trying to figure out how to move back.
Tilghman St. has to be the poopiest stretch of road on the east coast. you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere in North America that is more third world than that
What didn't you like? The paths along the Charles while not the most interesting are at least car free. There is the emerald necklace, the beach areas at Revere and Dorchester, and just outside the city great places like the Middlesex Fells and Battle Road. Really any area of the city and its surrounding towns might be runable - there is a reason it has such a robust track and marathon scene. The only runs I can think of that might suck are if you run newbury street in the middle of the day or you're from the country and have never seen homeless people.
phoenix is so terrible. Zero trees even in the few parks, endless pavement, every road is 6 lanes. Every other place I've been to in arizona is pretty nice (depending on the heat), Tucson, Sedona, Flagstaff obviously. But Phoenix is just evil

Savannah is rough. Touristy so people aimlessly wandering. Temperature is just as bad as anywhere in the US. Cobblestone sidewalks really felt great on the ankles. By far the worse of any city in the US.
I did a ton of long runs in international cities back in my working life, in the days before cell phones. I found that most cities I visited (none in Africa) have a river or coastline that you can usually find decent running along. But if you're stuck in a hotel in the middle of urban sprawl you're usually stuck on sidewalks or maybe doing multi-loops at a very small city park. Both of those usually suck. Pro-tip: (1) no matter what... in large cities you are usually much better off heading out very early in the morning before the city wakes up, (2) bring money for water refill and a taxi, and, the name/address of your hotel in the local language.
Athens can be sucky if you're far from the water, the sidewalks usually have a lot of cars parked on them and they can be rougher than most trails I've run on.
Hanoi a lot of sidewalk running in the heat, but I will say that every time I pulled out a map to navigate (it was before cell phones and I was doing a 20 mile loop the 1st morning I was there), someone would always try to help me - they were so nice.
Mumbai was ok, but I was in the northern part near Lake Pawai, I found a huge water pipe running north of the lake that supplied water to the city and did a nice dirt road run up there.
The only places I ever got "turned around" (sort of lost) were in Japan, the middle Tokyo and Yokohama. Oddly enough both were on cloudy days where I couldn't see the sun to get my bearings.
