He finished 4th at the trials 10k behind Nico so he needs to stay in that event, hope it goes tactical and use his mile speed to kick down to the top 3. I hope he does it!
What good is hoping it's tactical and kicking for 3rd place just to not make the team anyways?
His best chance is in the 10K by far, but why didn’t he go after the standard at the Ten or some other opportunity like every sensible person with a chance to qualify already did? Was he injured? If not, nobody to blame but himself. This guy has historically made bad decisions and won’t listen to anyone.

Exactly!!!
Right. It makes no sense which is why Nico and Graham and others got the standard out of the way months ago. Drew really has always had the talent to be great, but it’s planning such as this that screws him.
How does he not realize that 3:33 less than two weeks out from USAs does not give you a snowball’s chance in hell at making the team? You would think placing 4th at the trials in the 10k last year would have made him realize that is his future, and that he should do everything possible to get the standard out of the way as soon as the window opens because it’s never realistic to chase the standard at USAs and place top 3.
This all assuming he wants to make the 10k team of course. In the 5k if he tried on numerous opportunities to at least break 13, he might be worth a mention but he hasn’t so it’s hard to see him placing top 3 in such a ridiculously loaded field.

He wasn’t running all-out at The Ten?
It looks like he placed 11th in 27:24. Still, the standard is 27 flat and the Sound Running Ten was three and a half months ago. There was nowhere else to chase the standard in the world? Really? USAs this year has a high of 90 degrees. When they run the 10k it will still be like 80. If it were me and my chance of getting the standard at the race itself were slim to none, I would have tried to break 27 again if I didn’t quite do it at the Ten.

I think he’s just come to terms with being a 2nd tier US professional and doesn’t care about trying to be better than that.
I want to root for him but this mentality is making it very difficult
Not sure some of your realize how few high level 10Ks are available. The Ten is pretty much the only race set up for chasing a fast time in the US. There used to be the Night of the 10,000 in London, but that was canceled this year. Maybe Drew could have raced Prefontaine 10K but it would be pretty unlikely to run the standard at 11 am in July.

He could give himself a chance to get in on points…and if he isn’t giving himself a realistic path to go to Worlds in the 10,000m then he just plain shouldn’t run the event at the selection event. There’s a path to get into the 5,000 against tired guys, and it seems he’s giving up because of the system.

He could have paid his tinman teammates to pace him at literally any 10k anywhere in the world at any time during the qualifying window
Not sure why you think he's 'giving up' because of the system. The system is what it is, and if there is only one 10K a year set up to chase a time, and you miss the time, you have choices to make. Choosing not to run that event at USAs is one of them. Drew seems to be rounding into shape at the right time, and lucky for him, he can choose between 3 events at USAs. Plenty of opinions in this thread about what he should do (and some are frankly ridiculous). Drew will make a wise choice and have a good reason for making that choice.

Thats not really the point. He basically has a .005% chance of making the 10k team even if he wins it. He doesn’t have the points or the world standard. Same with the 5k. That’s the discussion here.

The guy's never been serious with Tinman and then his mom has his coaches.

The only statistical chance he has at making the 10k team is going for the standard and hoping for 3rd place. Anything less than that is a complete waste of time.
Why do people think he wasn't "going for the standard" when he ran 27:24 in March and 13:14 in June? I don't think he's done anything wrong with his race selection, the issue is he just isn't good enough to run the standard - and running different races isn't going to change that. The fact is the standards have become really challenging, maybe he can get in good enough shape to one day hit the standards, but he just isn't in that kind of shape this year.

Yes. That’s the entire point. The race wouldn’t be a realistic qualifying opportunity. As far as race selection we saw two guys run 13:07 and 12:59 domestically just this week. He opted for a 1500. I do think there’s a pathway to the 5000 world team but if he’s run sub-13:10 in a silver race he’d have it pretty much locked up on world ranking. Now it’s murky if US goes really slow.
It seems like the best/most realistic option for him to qualify for worlds is to try to place top 3 in the 5k and hope he gets in on ranking. It will be interesting to see what he actually does

thanks to everyone who responded to this thread!
Drew confirmed his plan to the Coffee Club that it is to scratch the 10,000 and the 1,500. He left a tiny sliver of chance he’d do the 15, but I think he was just humoring the guys. Smart choice and he saw the logic perfectly. Best of luck to him, I will be rooting for him to finish top 3.
