Fisher drops way down and goes 3:48.29? Very impressive.
Based on that, I pick him to win the 5,000 in Tokyo. That's incredible speed-endurance for a 5/10 guy, especially a double Oly medallist in those events He must be chomping at the bit now.
So you don´t think the Norwegian will run the 5000m in Tokyo?
I was super impressed by Nuguse going for it but please let's be honest. He didn't have a 3:44 in him "with more even pacing and a less aggressive first half." The proper phrase would be this - "Nuguse might have had a 3:44 in him if he'd been able to suck off of Jakob the whole race."
At 800, Yared was 1:51.4 - that's is 3:44 flat pace. So he went out on 3:44 flat pace and blew up.
He most certainly wasn't sniffing at world record at 1400. At 1200 meters, he was on 3:45.7 pace and he faded off that.
Now, was it possible he got the WR at 1200? Technically, yes. If you take Nuguse's 1st 1200 and then Laros' last 409, you'd barely break the WR. You'd run like 3:42.9.
I said at the beginning of the year that the Big US 3 of Hocker, Nuguse and Kessler wouldn't all make the team. Strand has a great shot to knock off Kessler, no?
And I said on the SC podcast this week, we need a way to get Strand into the Bowemran mile. I was like who needs to come out - Hoare was near the top of my mental list and he Hoare finishes DFL.
But if I was coaching Strand, I think I'd be happy he wasn't in Bowerman mile. His confidence is sky high now (unless you thought he could run like 3:45 with rabbits and win it).
Yeah I think Strand has a 3:45 in him (he wouldn’t have won though due to the pacing, it would have to be even). Kessler won’t make the team, between Hocker and Strand for first.
Nuguse is # 1 American.
Hocker # 2.
Kessler is still # 3 with Hoey and Strand in the hunt
If Jakob doesn't run worlds, who will lead the 1500?
I predict Hocker for the win in 3:50.01 (Slow that Centro in Rio!)
Yes, this is my idea of a joke. But still, the real Q is, what kind of world's final will we see without Jakob making the race?
This is a very interesting point. The 1500m has evolved to an outright time trial since Jakob became a force. I have absolutely no idea who will go to the front in September without him there and it will go back to drag race over the last 500m. This will benefit those with a big kick. Laros now has to go in as the favorite from my perspective. His last 400m was insane and the only thing that is yet to be seen if the pace isn't fast will he be able to hold off the likes of Hocker, Nader?? (recent 1:43 800) and Kerr. Don't write off Wightman either.
My take is Tim Cheruiyot would take it out, or probably another Kenyan like kipsang if he were to make it. I'd anticipate the first lap being slow but after that it'll be strung out.
Whatever happens it'll be worth watching. US trials will also be v interesting.
Kinda a PB for Kessler. Like 1.5s slower than what he ran indoors, where he was pulled 1609m by Nuguse with perfect pacing, compared to Strand's 3:48i where he had to run a bunch of extra distance, had a huge kick, and won the race. Similar to today, where Kessler got towed along for the entire distance and lost, while Strand had a classic big kick, won comfortably, and still ran 3:48.
I stand by my Kessler winning in 2028 take, but I think Strand makes the team over him this year.
I do see where you are coming from, but I just really don't see a possibility in which the Trials race is quick enough that a 7:30 3K guy outkicks a 1:43 800 guy. I don't see that 3rd spot being snagged in under 3:30, and I think if it's over 3:30, it's Kessler's to lose.
It is going to be very interesting to see what Nuguse does for US trials and what he takes from this race. It's possible he has the confidence to go gun to tape, and being okay with coming second, knowing that might be his best chance of making the team.
WOW, have a day young man! Do we think Laros is a metal contender now? I can’t help but think that if Jakob was in that race he would’ve destroyed everyone.
He is a special boy, just like Jonathan Gault. Talk about hyperbolic “thoughts” based on a flawed exhibition race. Naguse was the only one that went for it and was only temporarily joined by Habz. The field was too scared to get out of their bunch. Laros took his chance over the last 120m. That’s it. World competitions have rounds and tactics. Hobbs will be just fine. Why factor a time trial on YouTube into this? He was caught in the bunch and that’s it. Sure Strand is a national contender but there will be rounds and experience will play into qualifying. No need to single out Hobbs. Let’s see how everyone looks when their time tables line up. Will we be lamenting how long of a season Strand had because of NCAA? Do better special boy.
