physically she was back of the pack the whole time, ran a time that wouldn't compete at an ncaa final, and faded/eased at the end in dead last. gone was the trademark wire to wire. it's not even like she went out hard early then blew up.

mentally there seemed to be zero fight. she wasn't up near the front to start, and she wasn't trying to pick off stragglers. and she eased as opposed to fought through the line.

to me it's also a baptism by fire to stick her out there first race diamond league 800 with rose as pacer and everyone 2 or under.

She's never been a 1500m type, despite what Kersee thinks. The comfortable 4:10 early in the season showed reasonable fitness (while she could run a 4:03.4 when she was in 1:54.97 shape, it wasn't going to take a 1:54.97 to win this race). Not too far fetched to think she was in 1:57 shape, which was what was required to win the race. Not saying I was going to pick her, but her distance races were suggesting she was in 1:57 - 1:59 shape. She bombed. This was a terrible performance for her. Her past two races did not indicate she was in > 2:00 shape.

It seems like she just really doesn’t enjoy racing and running in general.

Yes, she has an immense amount of talent. Yes, she’s signed to a lucrative pro deal. Most of the people who frequent this board have trained and competed for years without 1% of the success she’s had. They’d kill for her talent and her pro deal, so there are constant threads piling on whenever she races moaning about how much money she makes, as if they’re the head of accounting at Nike.

Give her a break, how fast she runs doesn’t affect your life.

Lots of blame going around. People saying she needs to retire. Saying there is no chance she'll come back, that she's finished. It's only one race though, just one race. I have had so many bad races and performances myself that ultimately meant nothing, some of them were just bad days, some of them involved things I later overcame. She's only 22 years old btw, same age as anybody just coming out of the NCAA.

Also she just got married. That's a lot going on in a person's life. I agree that she needs a new coach and more of a team atmosphere. It's undeniable, the way he refuses to have her run the 400 makes it blatant malpractice. I'm not ready to put tons of blame on her though other than for not finding a new coach sooner.

People are being super harsh, but realistically a talent like this has like 5 more years to figure it out before they're actually washed.

Dude, she’s lying in her press media interviews. She was being honest when she said she was not happy to be running in Budapest in 2023. I’m sure she got a talking to by Nike and now knows she has to say the right things so she won’t get dropped from her contract. The Nike contract was the worst thing to happen to her, as apparently it killed her competitive drive and she still allegedly makes $500K - $750K per year.

I was skeptical about her return and I was right. I have no idea why Rojo is so optimistic. She is showing the world that she doesn’t want to or is unable to compete. Mark this post, she will be out of running within a year.

That might be true for a slower runner but if a 49 400m runner is in 1500m shape they can go sub 2 in their sleep

I cannot remember when she changed coaches? Didn't she change after her dominant performances a few years back? Or before?

She may have just had an issue, her 203 included 220 pace on last 100. She shut it down.

I just checked her points this year and her two races aren't as different as I'd thought, 1121 pts (1500) vs 1101 (800). We can't give her points for a 49s 400m unless she actually does one.

There is a lot of commentary on this board about Athing and her current state, but you summed it up simply, "She simply doesn't like to compete in T&F". That's a hard thing to understand and/or accept when someone is very good at something. About 50% of all girls at age 13/14 walk away from sports especially the really difficult ones like running, wrestling and gymnastics, etc. The ones who are really good will continue on because of the various pressures to continue, but as soon as there is an injury or some setback they will exit, or their motivation level is not the same.
