Keene State Invitational Recap:
Williams(9) edges out Tufts(7) by 1 point in a fast-off-the-line race, where the front pack went out in ~67 for the first 400m. Seems like an upset by the Ephmen, as Amokrane Aouchiche returned to the Jumbos racing squad and Tufts looked to increase their gap on Williams. The story of the team race was the top-heavy firepower of both teams duking it out at the front, with the top 2 individuals being Tufts runners Reisner and McCaleb, and 5 Ephmen vs 4 Jumbos in the top 10. Also, Tufts 1-5 spread was 44 seconds and Williams 1-5 spread was 22 seconds. The Eph's smaller spread will probably give them the edge over the Jumbos in larger, more competitive fields (all eyes on Conn...) on William's good day. However, the gap to their 6th man was significant (24 seconds), leaving them vulnerable if any of their top 5 runners have off days. Tufts had 8 runners in front of Eph's 6th, showing off their depth. Tuft's 5 and 6th runners crossed the line at the same time. William's lack of depth is surprising, but a "low-stick and supporting cast" style has been their thing for the past few years. We'll see if any of the Ephs can step up to the challenge of Reisner. This leads us to the individual race...
Individually (between the Ephs and Jumbos), some expected performances and some interesting improvements to each squad. Jonah Reisner established his lead early in the race and maintained the gap for the rest of the race. He finished 14 seconds in front of his teammate Cullen McCaleb in 2nd place. Cullen ran a strong race leading the chase pack, and running away from DeNatale in the last 1k. Cullen has been critical for the Jumbos, coming seemingly out of nowhere this season. Nikhil DeNatale had a decent day, finishing 3 seconds behind McCaleb for a solid 3rd place. Rick Yanashia gets out-kicked by Tyler Bolaske of Keene State, but finishes in 4th to step up hugely for the Ephs. Eli Welch finishes 3 seconds behind Yanashia, which was an underwhelming performance for the prior Eph top man. Would love to see Welch bounce back at Conn, and continue to be a contender for the NESCAC individual title. Luke Zanuck followed Welch 7 seconds later as the Williams 4th man, in a well-executed performance. Would be interesting to see if he can maintain contact with the guys a few seconds in front, and finish with the rest of his teammates. Harris Gulbransen finishes in 24:51.0, which is a solid improvement from the Purple Valley Classic and on brand from his past track season. Similar things can be said about Quinn Hampson, who improved well from PVC. Malcolm Oakes loses the kick-off at the end against Hampson and Gulbransen, but finishes as a solid 5th for Williams. He has had a underwhelming xc season so far. Calvin Cummings (Tufts 5th) closes out the Tufts 5 and Luke Brennan (6th) is right there to pad the Jumbos. They must feel good having their 6th so close, especially because Keiyu Mamiya and TJ Zwall of Williams were very far off Oakes. Not mentioned in order is Aouchiche, who has a decent showing for his first race back. Excited to see how this All-American can mix it up with the CAC title contenders come November.
I'll leave the analysis at that. Nothing exciting besides these two teams at Keene. All eyes on Conn...
