If you want to know why the Americans are doing so well as say to 25 years ago, all you have to do is watch those women's 800 and 1500 races. The coaching/tactics are just abysmal.
Embarrassing so. It's the type of racing you used to see in high school races all the time in the US but no longer see. The coaching of US HSers is way better than what they are getting.
Do you think Tsegays tactics were bad Rojo? She knew she could run 3:53 and nobody else could. She won the race in the first 400 meters. Yes the W800 was laughably bad from Duguma who obviously had no plan B if someone else wanted the lead.
It was the right tactic for this race. Welteji went with her but couldn't hold on and the only other person in the race with the potential to go with that pace was Hunter-Bell and she's not in her best shape right now so ran for a minor medal. If Tsegay tries this in Tokyo it will be suicide, the field will be too strong
I laughed, Garcia loves the motorbike celebration and Jakob apparently likes it. Have no idea if they’d spoken about it or Garcia was just shooting his shot.
Jakob seems to have a great relationship with the ON guys. LLikelythey've had a laugh about it while playing Mario Kart.

Agreed. Welteji is doing GST, I suspect she’s in pretty heavy training. Indoors she looked pretty mortal in her two wins. Freweyni Hailu is her training partner and she isn’t doing GST. She’s looked way sharper, and will probably decompress before outdoors.

Different Garcia! This guy is a New Balance athlete and sort of a lone wolf. I think he is an affable guy and he seemed to thank Jakob for the moment later.
Why wouldn’t you put him in the Hoppel tier? He beat Hoppel this winter.
Hoppel has run 1:41-mid and he treats indoors as a warmup for outdoors. Most 800m guys do. So it’s the same reason that if you go back many thought Elliott Giles was a medal contender when he broke 1:44 indoors a few years ago and I never believed. Most 800m guys skip indoors or do not attack it anywhere like Hoey did. Crestan I bet is at about 90%, which is even somewhat high. Him and Hoppel last year were different athletes outdoors last year and I’d expect the same this year.
Fair enough. I know indoor success doesn't always transfer to outdoors (look at Devynne Charlton), and we won't know for sure until we see how Hoey does this summer. I suppose believing that Hoey has reached the Hoppel tier comes down to whether you believe Hoey improved enough over the fall and winter from what we saw from him last summer. I believe that he did, based on his record-breaking performances, beating Hoppel, and now matching Hoppel as a world indoor champion. I can't speak to how much effort Hoppel put into his indoor campaign this year, but Hoppel did travel overseas to race in France last month, so that suggests to me at least a moderate level of investment.
I agree that the real test will be outdoors. I'm looking forward to seeing Hoppel vs Hoey clashes this summer!
Really boring 4x400 races. Probably why they haven't even been mentioned in this thread yet. The lack of the Netherlands really stood out here.
Probably because it was a foregone conclusion that the U.S. would win both races. The women's race was at least close through the second exchange, but Team USA's Rosey Effiong blew the race open with her third leg. I enjoyed watching that.

Who trains with Gudaf now that Frenweyni left the group? (And why?)

Why did the women go out so hard in the 800? 12.9 at 100 and mid 26's at 200 is insane

Three natural frontrunners all wanted the lead. Duguma outdoors has done fine running from behind so she made a big mistake not letting it go. I don’t blame Werro, it is nearly impossible for her to not cause madness running in a pack with her comically long stride.
I now think Hoey is THE MAN. That race was spectacular. Calmly and smoothly made sure he got to the pole position indoors regardless of the speed it took because he believed in his fitness to hold everyone off. Didn't panic with Miller's explosive move. Made a surge at the right time to regain the lead even though it was taxing he understood how hard it is to get around people indoors so he HAD to be in the lead coming off the last turn after such a brutal first 400. It wasn't luck, it was fitness, toughness, and the correct CONFIDENT decisions in those circumstances. And I even loved the shades of Eric Liddell hanging on. A healthy Hoey is gonna be a force to deal with.
Sinclaire Johnson is coached by her boyfriend and I have no idea what his credentials are for coaching a world class athlete. I saw on her instagram recently she’s decreased her mileage by quite a bit. Maybe not the best plan.
I mean yes he’s certainly in the mix, and I’ve seen outdoors he can run pretty well from mid-pack. I just think he’s probably in the Kinyamal/Pattison/Crestan range and not in the Tual/Hoppel range yet, let alone Wanyonyi/Arop/Sedjati tier.

Hoppel said in a interview after Millrsoe; he took the entire fall off. Only training for a month before they raced at Millrose. He also stated that Hoey did the opposite, alluding that he probably shouldn't have raced him while not at 100% form.
Utter cringe by García, who's not really talked to much by other ESP athletes: obviously just going for the pic with GOAT "Look at me and my pal" years later.
I think Hoey has done enough this indoor season to be taken seriously this summer. His race today wasn't as impressive as his earlier performances this winter, but keep in mind that this was third day in a row of racing. It's really difficult to produce a stellar result on a third consecutive day of racing. The men's 800m schedule will be more favorable in Tokyo, where there will be a day off in between each round.

How isn't he? His solo 1:43.24 indoors is more impressive to me than Hoppel's solo 1:42.7 trials race.

I don't think it is for one thing. Hoppel led that one gun-to-tape and ran a half-second faster. He also had to run faster to 200 (24.08) and fend off a hard Brandon Miller challenge on the backstretch, whereas Hoey was unopposed at Ocean Breeze. He also uncorked a 12.58 last 100 and a 25.48 last 200 and then ran 1:41-mid outdoors. You have to understand there are levels to this. Again, Elliott Giles ran sub-1:44 indoors. I don't think Hoey is that, but he might also be around 1:42-low/mid shape, which while awesome doesn't put him in medal contention.

the reality is, he likely doesn't go for the double if the competiton is very stiff. 3 straight days is brutal.
I know this upsets people, you can't handle a comment that doesn't deify Jakob. He's not going to run a 3k against Aregawi the day before racing Hocker, Kerr, and Nuguse. if the 3000 is on the final day, good chance he goes for it.
At Pre in 2023 he ran 0.6 seconds slower than the mile WR (4th all time) beating Nuguse and Hocker ++ before he ran a 7:23.63 3000 (3rd all time) the day after, beating Kejelcha, Fisher, Barega and Aregawi.
He have doubled in both of his olympic games, in both of his world championships, in all three senior european championships, in all four european indoor championships, in his worlds and european junior champs.
