$3m is a big number but from what I have heard that the number to get an event off is even higher. When World XC was in Australia it was funded by the government and the number is rumoured to be $10m+

The unions do a batter job. The infield and outfield only has 1/10th the Union workers than if they had Volunteers. Volunteers don't work, want free swag, and sit around to watch the meet. Union workers are paid and bust their asses to get chosen for the next gig. The meet is managed better with Unions around. With Unions u have yoone Official lay down the lane cones at the 3SC. With volunteers you have one official FOR EACH cone mosey out to place the cone on the yellow, take a selfie, then giggle to fellow officials like it's a social.

Now why would anyone be dumb enough to bid for either a World Athletics or USATF event, unless you seriously think you're going to get back the money you invest in the event?
News flash to anyone thinking about bidding for the marathon trials in 2028--you have a better shot of getting your money back by opening up a bag of cash and letting the wind blow it than getting extorted by Max and his minions.
BTW, did anyone see Seb Coe post on social media that he was at the Oscars a few nights ago? Now we know the true reason--a distraction! He was in the USA to pull the plug on San Diego!
There are three main things involved in hosting something like this:
The organizational issues - do you have sponsors, hotels, permits, paperwork, logistics and local support in the hosting community?
The volunteer and staffing issues - do you have the people on the ground who can run an event like this?
And of course, the money to pay for all of the above? A world-class event is not cheap.
So this makes me wonder which aspect was too much for USATF to handle? Where did it break down? Maybe talking to the local side of the event (not just USATF) will help get you to a more "real" and honest answer since WA and USATF will likely be keen on downplaying whatever happened...
You are missing one extra thing VISAs.
I am organizing a small international conference in 2026. We had to pull out of Colorado. Unfortunately, due to current immigration measures, visitor visas for people from South American, African, and Asian countries are too much in limbo. Even under Biden's administration the US was slow to proccess visas for certain countries. Enough so that it caused problems. But under the current climate there is way too much fear that participants will be blocked or have visitor visas taking longer than 3 months to proccess, which is not workable for a major international event especially ones where participants may be slected only a month or so before coming.

My guess its about difficulty securing last minute visas to the USA under the current administration. Even Kenya is a difficult country to secure a last minute visa for right now. Participants at an international conference were blocked from attending from Kenya recently due to their visas not being processed in time (months in advance). For world marathon majors where start lists are announced half a year before the event there is enough time to secure these visas. But for a world athletics where teams are selected based on current fitness the event just wont work in the USA due to the current immigration proccesses.
World Athletics bids must include a Convention Center with rooms for 1 week of meetings of the WA members. They conduct votes for officers, make rules, form commitees, have debates, etc. You have to pay for catering, snacks, lunch, rental cars, 5 Star Hotel,s, straight and gay bar tabs, etc. The LOC or the host city musy pay the entire Bill.
Not politically related. This Event was in trouble after the official launch. The marketing director abruptly quit and the Event CEO tried his best but was not able to secure a replacement in due time. Given the lack of marketing even in California where most of the mass participation entrants were expected to come from, registrations tanked right out of the gate. As of mid-January there were only 267 confirmed entrants for all combined Events.
I figured the registration was bad when I checked a week or two ago and saw that the "early registration gets 50% off the "Training for the World Championship" shirt was still up. I signed up back in November because I thought it was going to sell out fast. Apparently I never needed to worry.
But you're dead on about the lack of marketing. I think I only knew about it because I'm on the WA email list. I've seen jack all about the championship anywhere in San Diego and I work downtown, only about a mile from Balboa. The organizers really dropped the ball on getting the word out. Hell, some of my coworkers run and they had no clue about worlds being in San Diego when I brought up the news today.

I think it's getting the travelpermits granted. It's sometimes a problem before the Pre-classic, there were some problems befor Eugene22 and Eugene WJC.

It's the same catch-22 as Home Depot had 20 years ago. IAAF Prez had to answer to his 200 voting countries and provide freebies and meeting rooms the week before like all other IAAF events or he would be voted out of office. This baggage is what Seb Coe has to deal with or he's out of office as well. Seb has to deliver the PERKS!
