Just listened to Mantz on Citius Mag & they were talking about why the record lasted for so long. Obviously Ryan Hall was talented & put it out of reach for some time. Thinking more about the common conversation on here about lack of fast marathon times & all that, Houston is really the only race in the US that attracts elite runners. It's the only World Athletics half in the US that carries a label. It also gets inconsistent weather (humid pretty much every other year) & comes at a time when people might be in their offseason/aren't as fit. I think it's lazy to just say Americans don't run fast when the opportunities really aren't there. Our best marathoners go to NYC/Boston & race sparingly before those events to not jeopardize one of their few paydays. We would see some fast marathons if everyone who just went under 1:02 was lining up for London/Berlin for their next two races. This years Houston race was really the first time in recent memory a lot of good runners, not outside of their primes, all targeted the half together, went for it, & got ok enough weather to do that.
