There may be a family connection to Pelosi.
Thomas D'Alesandro III (1929-2019) was Pelosi's brother. He served as Mayor of Baltimore from 1967 to 1971. Nicholas Mangione was one of D'Alesandro's more controversial appointees to the Baltimore School Board.
The following is from the Baltimore Afro-American, December 26, 1970. Note the last sentence:
Mayor D'Alesandro has been under considerable pressure in recent months to name a fifth black member to the school board to give it some balance in relation to the majority of black students in the city's public schools.
Proponents of this argument hold, among other things, that a majority black member school board would be far more sensitive to the problems and needs of the schools in terms of administration and necessary community relationship.
The Mayor however, has chosen to move with deliberate slowness in this area, giving little or no hint of his intentions.
His most recent nomination of Mr. Mangione proved to be somewhat of a shocking setback to the black community when that person appeared at a school board meeting and referred to black male members as "boys" and to the lone veteran black lady member as "Mrs. boy".
The Mayor has been hard pressed to explain the Mangione appointment as the man is in his family.
