Lol. I will go with a runner who won nxn three times, set multiple course records on storied courses, had higher srs, and who did not lose in three years despite injury. But whatever.
NXN was weaker back then. Footlocker still had precedence.
But Nike has continued to pour gobs of money into NXN, and the Newbury Park boys, coached by persona Sean Brosnan, greatly increased the visibility, prestige, and consequent importance of NXN.
Regarding Tuohy, I don’t think any sensible person would think the G.O.A.T. would have any trouble crushing her too, if high-school Tuohy had been on the start line yesterday.
well I think I am sensible, but I would have liked to see that race as I don't think it is clear who would have won.
Drivel. Also we never got to see a senior age, healthy Tuohy in high school. Still, even not at a hundred percent she set the course record as a junior in 2018 and beat a very strong Chimel by 19 seconds that year. But think what you like.
According to Tullyrunners.com the highest numerical score for any girl in the history of hs cross country was Amber Trotter at 181 followed by Melody Fairchild at 178. Hedengren was course graded at 172 which tied Touhy's graded score for this course though I think she was mid 170s perhaps at Holmdel. This is somewhat of a subjective scale so the GOAT performance is debatable. For guys Dathan Ritzenheim still probably has highest score of all time,
Amber Trotter was pretty good. So how many times did Amber Trotter run the esteemed Woodward Park? That course should be a pretty good measuring stick, considering the thousands of runners that have run it.

I agree. But if they are getting replaced every two to three years, then something unusual is going on.
Jordan and Gretzky and Phelps don't get surpassed every couple seasons...
There is something going on with hs girls. 6-7 years ago very few in a year broke 10:00 or 4:40 and now those lists get long (and 2 now sub 4:30 in same year (same day).
Exactly. It’s “awareness” by the new breed, in accomplishments and training. Back then, few were training to the level of what Touhy was. Now, gals like Leachman know they can add on high volumes of aerobic conditioning through cross-training.
I would say this year’s winner, with that performance, has sealed her position as THE defacto American high-school cross-country G.O.A.T.
Hedengren is #2.
Melody Fairchild is still the GOAT. She demolished the Footlocker field by a full minute and set a course record that has lasted for 34 years and counting. Temperatures that day were 80 degrees, the hottest it had ever been for the race up until that time. She beat Deena Kastor (3x Olympian, Olympic bronze, Amercian Record holder) by 1:14, Amy Rudolph (2x NCAA Champ, 2x Olympian) by 1:43, and Jen Rhines (5x NCAA champ, 3x Olympian) by 1:47.
A couple months later, she won the bronze medal at the World Junior Cross Country Championships. Among those she beat were Kastor by 0:56, Ethiopia's Gete Wami (World Championship gold and bronze, Olympic silver and two bronze), Romania's Gabby Szabo (Olympic gold, silver, and bronze, World Outdoor 3x gold, World Indoor 4x gold, 1 silver), and somebody named Paula Radcliffe from Great Britain.

Greatest performances of all time:
Jane Hedengren, Melody Fairchild, Amber Trotter @ their national champs.
Greatest XC career:
3x NXN winner Katelyn Tuohy.
Sarah Baxter is a close 2nd (2x NXN winner, 3rd place.) Any others?

Hedengren broke the CR by 4.5 seconds.
Not a Tuohy fanatic like some others, but Tuohy had the CR pre-super shoes.
Beating the CR by a few seconds doesn’t show Hedengren would have ‘crushed her’ without any trouble. She would have run much faster without the rain conditions, but in a hypothetical, it would probably be close.

What an idiotic take. She took down Tuohy’s dry-course record, as I originally said. Why don’t you share how much faster she was than Tuohy’s time in the the rain and mud?
Super shoes, depending on the shoe, would be worse in those conditions, which require spikes.

I guess if you want to consider full careers, Fairchild also won Footlocker in 1989 and was runner-up in 1988. She beat Kastor and Carol Zajac (4x NCAA champ w/ 2 in XC) both of those years, Rudolph in 1989, and Cheri Goddard in '88. I'm pretty sure the only two races she lost in her sophomore through senior years were 2nd at Footlocker as a sophomore and the 3rd at World Cross as a senior.

Agree to disagree. I consider it pretty even. Super shoes on a wet course could be argued as being equal to standard shoes on a dry course.

Did they even bother with super shoes in that swamp? Why would you wear them for 3 inches of mud and puddles on grass?
Interesting on Hedengren is that during '24 spring track, and at Woodbridge xc she was even with the other current national leaders. (she even lost to Blade at Woodbridge) Only starting with NXR sw, did she build a 45 second gap from the others.
I'm curious how that gap will show up in track.
Will Leachman get healthy and close it, or will Hedengren win 2 mile by 20 seconds?
Another side note, Leachman will now be the favorite at Foot Locker. The nxn #2 Garces will be there too and Dailey from CA. Leachman will be favored due experience and another week of recovery.
