1.) it wasn’t a peaceful border, as Ukrainians were killing their own people in an ongoing basis since 2014.
2.) For the past 30 years, Russia has not been a nation hostile to the US. When was the last time Russia attacked the US?

Putin in 2014 referred to the Donbas separatists as the “militia of New Russia” and they were supplied with Russian arms and "advisors", so there's that.

Which is it? Were they Ukrainian citizens being killed by their own government? Or were they Russians? If they were Russians as you are implying then Russia has a justification to escalate.

They were Russian proxy forces consisting of Ukrainian citizens and Russians, including enlisted Russian military forces, backed by the Kremlin, trying to overthrow Ukrainian control of the Donbas region.
So by your logic Ukraine was justified in a military response in 2014.
In any case, the conflict between Donbas separatists and the Ukrainian government was in a tense but stable standoff for years preceding Russia's full scale invasion in 2022, so using that as a justification for Russia's invasion is stupid.
