to the participants registered under a postcode affected by the floods giving them the option to ask for a full refund or if they wish to, to keep their registration. They also ask that if they do choose to participate to confirm by following a link and to keep training (highlighted in bold).

Based on the wording of that last paragraph I guess they want to make it happen as planned, on the 1st of December.

Endurance sports are known to help process trauma and I think is really good from the organisation to offer the victims the option to choose. For the ones that want to go ahead it could be that opportunity to channel some of that pain and anger. I read comments in the marathon Facebook groups from some runners from the affected areas saying that they want the marathon to go ahead as it is their only Outlook in all this tragedy.

I really don't get what the fearmongerers are getting from this. They are literally disrespecting everyone for the sake of it, the victims and the visitors runners.

Bro, it's not fear mongering. Literally the infrastructure likely won't be there to support an event of tens of thousands of people. It's simple logistics.

I understand all the *fair* points regarding a cancellation. And also thinking from a economical and practical perspective, after a massive disaster and after the initial days of shock and anger passed, an event like the marathon might be good for the local economy and God forbid, for the community mood.

My wife's a cleaner and I'm a decorator so not really middle class. We will go to Valencia whatever happens, I've barely had any holiday this year

At this point, it's obviously going to go ahead. The flood is perhaps not as bad as the media is making it out to be.

I guess a major issue is also that the marathon ties human resources (esp. police/firefighters) that can be better used for cleaning and/or organizing volunteers. My understanding is that this is how a huge part of local disaster help is happening right now: thousands of city people are helping out in the affected suburbs, supported and organized by public sector forces. Cleaning up the mess and helping people back into their homes will be a longer process. The city will have to balance economic gains, feasibility, and local needs. Not surprised it's taking them time, this is not just an organizer decision imo.

You mean like "Valencia has went through" instead of "Valencia has gone trough" ? That's not a faked mistake but a genuine one.

I ran the Milan marathon in 2024 and it was well organized.

Correction there were no dixies on the course so people were peeing everywhere. Other than that it was OK.

Yes you are right. My running club chief has asked us if we wish to protest this marathon if it goes ahead and we agree no we don't. We don't support the government but we cannot blame the international runners for this mess. We prefer if you don't come this year though.

They immediately stated that they'll make an announcement next week. For the past couple of days most people working for the government and sport clubs were involved in helping out affected communities.
