Does Coogan coach any male athletes? Just curious - I mostly know NB Boston for their mid D women. Would be an obvious choice for Graham Blanks when he graduates, too
Jerry is punching the air rn. Glad these upcoming athletes are not choosing bowerman anymore.
If I was my daughter's agent no way in hell would I let her anywhere near any Oregon-based Nike group, especially after Salazar/Mary Cain/Shelburrito and "never heard of nandro" Schumacher. With NBB being a female-focused team and Coogan's daughter an active member, I'd feel a lot more at ease with them.
Q: When do you start recruiting for a runner to join your team? Is there anything in particular that you’re looking for in an athlete? A: Number one, it’s being healthy. I know the UMass, New Hampshire and SUNY Binghamton coaches. The key is having really healthy runners. I think almost everyone on my team, if they didn’t end up being distance runners, would’ve been playing Division III soccer or something. They’re athletic. They’re not fragile little toothpicks – not that there’s anything wrong with being skinny. You’re better off being healthy and athletic. If you’re forcing yourself to be a toothpick, then I think it’s very difficult to maintain it.
That’s a good article. She ran a 5:15 mile when she was 12, just to beat her dad. That’s actually insane, considering she wasn’t even a competitive runner at that age.
I thought that Runner's World article was interesting for the repeated mentions of how bright Valby is, and insightful. Are they pushing against some belief that she's just a ditzy blond, for marketing purposes? Hints of that belief have certainly appeared here after some of her post-race interviews.
If anything I could see Purrier being a perfect training partner for her - someone who is faster over 5k and also known for her kick, which is what Parker will need to work on to be competitive globally.
Other than being based in the NE there is really no downside to being associated with this coach and training group. Glad for her and I cant wait to see what she does in the future.
Winter weather and no altitude... other than that, I think she'll love that training group!
Arc Trainer is the biggest loser here. I don’t see how they didn’t get her involved in their advertising. perhaps because it’s commercial gym equipment and not marketed for home use. Could have modified it and marketed it like a peloton to the millions of recreational runners as a way to stay healthy and decrease injury. (whether true or not)
I would have guessed that she would have gone to Nike like a lot of others I'm assuming guessed.
Either way, I don't think she'll ever be a factor on the world stage in terms of actually winning anything, but I guess this is good for her and New Balance in terms of selling shoes? I guess? Who knows?
I mean, Sydney is going to go down in history as one of the greatest track athletes ever, but does she sell New Balance any shoes? And Parker Valby won't accomplish a fraction of what Sydney has done, but will she sell New Balance shoes? I guess we'll see.
Does New Balance have a "cool" factor? It doesn't feel like it to me. I could have seen her going to On before New Balance, but it's of course her choice.
I agree. You can get into amazing shape but then get hammered in the last lap by those with faster speed. Parker has zero ability to switch gears and sprint.

Can you imagine valby getting run through the bowerman ringer? She'd be absolutely destroyed- like, not able to walk when she was an adult type of destroyed. Just look at Knight- that's literally the worst fit possible. Jerry is getting karma, The same with Flanagan.

She will after training with the best collective team of womens 1500 runners in the country. That is exactly what she is about to get really good at!
