I think Clovis North and Matilda Torres should also be added. They looked really strong against Buchanan. Also I wonder where Mira Costa and Jesuit are. Maybe they asked to be in the rated
Buchanan’s #1 (sanders) was only their 5th man at Fleet Feet which made their score a little higher.
But race placements can change. That happened a couple of years ago when Newbury Park’s B team was originally in the sweepstakes race, and then they were moved down to the rated race
Made a preseason list of every team that should be invited to the sweepstakes.
Southwest Hamilton - Rock Canyon - Herriman - Desert Hills - Orem - Skyridge -
Southeast Greer Middle College Charter -
Northwest Coeur d’Alene - Crater - Mercer Island -
South Southlake Carroll - The Woodlands -
California Great Oak - ML King - Buchanan - Arnold O. Beckman - Jesuit SJ - Mira Costa - Jserra - Tesoro - Hart- Oaks Christian -
Please Rich Gonzalez don't leave out any good team this year like you did with Austin Vandegrift last year, thanks!
Oaks Christian is probably a Rated team this year. Doesn't seem like the transfer rumor was true based on a Westcoast XC article I read last night unless the "new" runner was just not at the practice session they had when the article was being made.
They'll probably be a favorite to win that race though if their 5th made good improvement. Even just a low 16 minute time with their top 4 dropping sub 15 times would be enough to win as long as another Austin Vandegrift situation doesn't occur.

There's always some level of cross over between divisions. Every year there are teams that would place very well in sweeps that are in the rated race, teams that would place very well in rated that are in varsity divisions, and even some teams that would hold their own in the sweeps race from varsity races.
It's never perfect. Vandegrift's exclusion was pretty bad but there will be teams this year that should absolutely be in a better section that get left out.

This year it could be Clovis North and Matilda Torres. I feel like they could be as good as Beckman was last year if not even better.

Vacaville, Mira Costa and Mercer Island could be very strong teams.

I had El Toro at #36 and Poly Riverside #37 in my projections. Dana Hills is basically unrankable due to lack of data, but so strong 1-2 that alone makes them a potential wildcard.
my own personal rankings of california teams at woodbridge
Very Interesting Jserra Mira Costa Beckman Buchanan ML King Great Oak Jesuit CA
Interesting
Clovis East Menlo Trabuco Hills Millikan Palisades Charter Matilda Torres Tesoro Hart Clovis North Vacaville Woodbridge De La Salle
hopefully will be switched out with a better team like mercer island wa or something - Foothill Technology Ayala Los Altos Cresenta Valley Not interesting Dana Hills Poly Riverside El Toro
Was just looking at the releases that’s how competitive Woodbridge is, Mercer Island has three sub-9:20 guys (one 8:41 guy) and they won’t be in Sweepstakes. A lot can change until Sep 20/21 but fun times.

I think this year the rates race will be really competitive. Probably multiple teams on last year’s Austin Vandegrift level
Woodbridge is a joke. Way to early in the season, and might as well just be three miles on a track. Not a cross country race by any semblance of the name. Guess people like to get the fake times that the race produces.
Wonder how long the race will actually be this year. They going to screw up the measurement again?
A couple of interesting girls teams in the sweeps race...
Carson (NV): Average 1600m time of 5:31.4 for their top 5 last year. Lifetime personal bests average at 5:25.37. Even if all of the times were run in Carson, altitude conversion only goes down to 5:24.5 Skyridge (UT): Average 1600m time of 5:35.38.
Barring an impact transfer, these seem out of place...
Newbury Park boys team is entered both in the Sweepstakes AND the rated race. Interesting.
Dana Hills has a strong 1-2, but other than that, I’m not sure if they have what it takes to make the sweepstakes race. If they didn’t make the sweepstakes race, Noonan would need to enter there individually to compete there.
Jesuit CA is not entered in either race. Based on the schedule on their Instagram page, they won’t be doing Woodbridge

rich made a 4th update. rated race could be interesting with clovis north and vacaville going head to head.
it feels bad that woodbridge didn't make the sweeps for their own meet. I feel like they deserve to be in it and I was too critical of them earlier. They really do have a solid 1-2 punch with lots of good young runners that could make a nice jump. I feel like Vacaville and Clovis North were one of the 4 teams that wanted to be in the rated to keep a low profile
Why would someone decline an invite to the sweeps race? Why apply to get in and then back out? Very strange.
Rich added a new note
(Note: Four schools [now three as one has changed its mind, with another pending] we tabbed for Sweepstakes have declined and asked to be placed in Rated.
To make it even more confusing, one changed it's mind after getting moved!
So one school originally asked for Sweeps, got in, asked to be moved to Rated, and then asked to be added back to Sweeps.
