reading all this back and forth about Wolfe and Blanks all I can think is how it was right there for the taking for Cooper Teare. He's seriously gotta be crushed he couldn't run a 13:10.
he ran a 12:54 in May, literally a month later runs almost 50 seconds slower. heat or not, he'll be having nightmares about this for the next 4 years.

Broken body? He ran 13:02 in December, got a stress reaction in his femoral shaft due to al leg length discrepancy that is aggravated by running on the indoor track and missed a few weeks, and is in great shape in July. It's not really that shocking, is it?

Blanks said he was "off his feet for a couple of months" in his post race interview. And at 6:30 he goes in depth: 6 weeks of no running then 2-3 weeks in the AlterG treadmill before easing back into real running. It wasn't nothing.
Rumor is Blanks could take that 3rd spot, but I dont see that as a good choice. He hasnt even touched the standard since december, and there are numerous other athletes with the standard as well, so I dont know why he is even in the conversation. Just send Wolfe, he earned it. If the others wanted it bad enough, they wouldve beat wolfe.
They can't "just send Wolfe" if he doesn't make it in by ranking after all scratches/entries are known. If enough scratch that he is ranked high enough we will send him. The reason we can send Blanks instead is that he has the standard and can go regardless of ranking.
Why send blanks if he cant even medal at the trials?
Get rid of the dumb regionals for NCAA outdoors. I mean, look at the fields that made it to the 1500m finals. Exactly who you thought would make it. Did they really need to go through four rounds over two weeks for that? The scheduling of conference meets, regionals, NCAA champs and Trials means if you want to run a fast time outdoors you have to do it in April when there are few options and you're in the middle of a training block.
If they got rid of regionals a bunch of fast last-chance meets would pop up, or they'd have the option of meets like the LA Grand Prix and Pre.

After Prefontaine, Teare should've decided to just go all in on the 5,000. Forget the 1500.
To summarize, he needs four scratches. These guys below are already projected to come out of the rankings.

Hm, I see now that others have been saying that in this thread, apologies. Then does anyone have a reputable source for that interpretation of the qualification rules? Seeing so much speculation and very little clear information or sources on which that speculation is based.

yesterday was the final day that results counted, the official announcement from World Athletics RE finalised Road to Paris rankings and qualifiers is on July 7th
No idea what time or where they will publish this stuff though. Presumably just a press release on their website + Twitter

Related question: Is Jakob in for sure? I was looking at the road to Paris rankings and I noticed he was at the top of the world rankings quota in like #36 or something. Are there gonna be guaranteed spots for other countries like the Marathon that might push him out?

Not sure which one you're referring to. None of Rojo's posts that I've seen directly answer the question about removing US runners ahead of Wolfe.
But as I've given it more thought it does seem logical that this is the case. Not all countries use a trials format to select their teams, and no countries have any real authority or mechanism for dictating who does or does not "count" on the list. The ranking is the ranking, the selections are secondary to that.
Not going for snark here but you’re making my point. She’s incredible and was super fun to watch but that was one runner who was at UNC 20 years ago. Allan Johnson was in the 90’s but it’s not like we’ve had a ton of excitement at the national level. The program has been awesome lately so hopefully we’re on the upswing.
Once Wolfe broke into third I knew he would remain there. The sustained finish is his strength. That's been blatantly obvious following him all year and dating to last season.
It's sick as a Canes fan who follows the ACC closely. The two biggest what ifs of trials are Markezich failing on the final water jump of the steeplechase and Wolfe not managing a race somewhere to move high enough in the rankings. It was never a question of ability.
At least USC got many through, including most of the borderline situations like TT Terry and Anna Cockrell. That's my long ago alma mater.
