Of course there is. The way to do that is not taking a ridiculous amount of extremely difficult classes for no reason. Like said before, balance and management.
People need to learn to take things slow. They are always in such a rush to try and speedrun everything as quick as possible, leading to obvious burnout

Running matters in high school, not in college. If you saved anything for college, when you could've had that highschool glory, then 98.9% of the time you made a mistake, because high school is the best it gets.

All of those top guys were sub-4:15 types but they are not all the 4 flat or close hs runners, so there is some movement up and down the rankings from hs to college even there. But 4 out of the 9 Americans at the top were either the best or very close to the best in the United States in high school.
I see this all the time at our local HS. Many many many state titles in CA- and you can count on one hand the ones who went on to find similar success in college.
The HS is in a small Affluent town- the coach has them running 60-80 miles weeks by senior year, all the meets are LOADED with parental support and fanfare… they are the best team on campus by far….
then in college - even at top 25 teams- all of that goes away. Races are hardly attended by anyone cheering them on, they’re no longer the best runner, the training is hard to progress, and the fun sort of ends.

I think kids like this reach their physical maturity much earlier than late bloomers. Because some kids blossom early we tag them as a talent. When in reality there are dozens of late blooming Cade Flatts that get to 1:46 in their mid-20s instead of their teens. Nutrition, good coach, weight training, etc...etc... eventually equalize the talents vs the harder workers.

while i don't suffer too much, i cringe when pretty much anyone gets injured, i like see everyone fit, and a legendary fight to death , figuratively speaking

I highly doubt that lol. Most people dislike him because he's such a prick. I for one am happy to see his downfall

As long as these mythical 100mpw HS runners enter college mentally and physically healthy, my opinion is they are better prepared for the college training and racing workload. I don’t buy the argument that reaching maximum training potential in HS magically reduces maximum potential in college. In fact I argue the opposite.
A runner of unexceptional talent can do really well at the HS level with an exceptional commitment to training. Why not try to maximize their talent at the HS level? More power to them if they can become state champion! The only issue I see are college coaches fooled into wasting scholarships on kids they mistakenly think have a high ceiling. Coaches have to do due diligence.
My advice to HS runners who aspire to be future steeple/5k/10k college D1 runners, is by end of HS you should be able to comfortably run 60+ mpw with a weekly long run of at least 13 miles. If you are not prepared for college level running entering XC your freshman year then *this* is a greater predictor for lack of success in college. I see more HS coaches doing this disservice versus overtraining their runners.
