Is someone says, 'wow, he really ran well BUT... i was a bit off that day' and takes the same stance over and over again what does that imply? Nothing? Something? I know what it means to mean.
The problem here is, IMO, that Jakob has a dream / vision of being better than everybody else…
But this vision / goal is also what makes him especially interesting to some of us…
I myself can very much identify with his mindset here -I too would have gone for the same if I was in his position.
I don’t think it’s condescending to have a dream of being the best -maybe we all have dreamt dreams like that some time in our lives…
I think it’s crucial to acknowledge the following to avoid being unfair to Jakob:
1. He has never regarded himself as a special talent, with special rights.
2. He acknowledges that he is more than average competitive, maybe because of his upbringing. So here he has some self insight he can use to moderate himself by -when he gets older and more mature, and politically correct.
3. Jakob’s narrative seems to be this: He is nothing special. -A lot of us could do / could have done the same regime as he does, and become just as good. But his point is also this: He has been fortunate by growing up with a support system one only can dream of. And that has placed him in a position of entitlement (he just have to follow up by trying to unfold his full potential; for his own sake, but also for all of us who think his goal and development is really exciting). His entitlement is thus twofold:
A) He has (through his experience from growing up in Team Ingebrigtsen) special insight in what really matters training wise, and this insight is so extraordinary (very much because of Marius Bakken’s research) that it has given him a huge advantage (especially because of the long term commitment since early childhood) to other athletes.
B) Because of his advantage he is entitled to think about him self as better / about to be better than everybody else. He is just stating a fact…
The difference between you and me, Armstronglivs, is, I think, that you regard Jakob’s mindset here as narcissistic and disrespectful, whereas I don’t at all. -I think one is allowed to be better in a skill than others (and talk about it) without being marked as selfish..! People, like f.ex Kerr, just have to deal with it the best they can -Kerr is now letting his feet doing most of the talking, which I think is the correct way of challenging a pain in the arse like Jakob!
It is your call if you think Jakob has said something stupid but what he says is also indicative of his character, especially as he has made these kinds of comments more than once. At the very least, he is a big-head. But nor does he show much respect for his competitors.

You're a funny fellow. You project your own niceness on to Jakob. He transparently isn't as you describe. He thinks he is the best - by far - and wants everyone to know it, and especially when he loses. As I said earlier - an ego that exceeds his actual talent.
This kind of talk is nonsense. First of all, in this case, Kerr has no power over whether someone belittles him or not, and secondly, just do your talking on the track. So many things can go wrong in a target race that will make you look the fool if you don't deliver...illness, injury during training, getting boxed in and not able to get out, stepping on the rail and twising an ankle, and any number of things from food poisioning to horrible sleep.
I know some of you mooks love this kind of thing, but to me trash talk in running is the least interesting thing about the sport.

I respect that this is how you regard this, and I’m fine with you having the last word here until I / we can come up with something new.
You are absolutely wrong there. But your arrogance is telling.
On Letsrun you have former elite runners, like Salvitore Stitchmo or malmo. You have a famous coach, like Renato Canova. Poster "coahc" has had athletes run in World Championships (at least one that I can remember, in Aarhus). I coached an athlete who got a bronze medal at continental level back in the 1990s. David Katz, who measures/certifies road race courses, he posts often too.
So yes, you have knowledgeable people posting here, and you have armchair experts, like you.
I judge the quality of what I read by its content and how it is expressed, not by who says it.
Who has said something is extremely important to you.
