If you jump 25 feet in practice, it doesn't get you into the nationals. If you run a sub-4 mile time trial in practice, it doesn't get you a spot in the nationals. This was a solo time trial, hours after the meet. Nice effort. Not a qualifying time.
NAILED IT. Obvious DQ. Feel bad for the girls but this isn't even close to debatable.
I will give them credit for filming it as I was thinking it was like the George Mason DMR scenarios where they just flat out made up a time to qualify for NCAAs. I forgot how they got caught.

WRONG. This used to happen ALL THE TIME in D1 before they got rid of last chance meets.
The meet director has 100% latitude to change the meet schedule during the meet as long as all teams are notified. This still happens all the time - for example reseeding the 200m after scratches and removing a few sections, thus making the 4x4 relays earlier. Another example is a meet being delayed to wait for better weather.
There are NO rules that prohibit pushing back a time schedule, and no rules that require a specific reason to change a schedule. There is no rule the meet director can't delay a 4x4 for 5 hours.
There was a USATF certified official there starting the race, you can clearly see in the video. The timer was still there with their FAT timing system. It is all caught on video, they legit ran the time in the results.
Results being posted doesn't mean the meet had been declared over, because every 2 day meet posts results after day 1 when the meet is clearly not over.
A meet is over when all events have been completed. They made the decision to delay the 4x4. This is allowed. No other teams were entered, so they did not need permission to due so.

It's pretty funny that because D1 coaches cheated so badly and so often at an obviously unethical loophole that they shut it down altogether, that somehow makes it OK that a D3 coach did it years down the line.
It used to be legal to segregate schools by race, but now it's not. "Oh, but they used to be segregated!" isn't a particularly great justification for someone trying to do it today.

I called this unethical in an earlier post, but after reading this I actually agree that it doesn't break any rules.
I've seen meets delay distance events because of rain. There are no injury risks of running in the rain, so the only reason to delay is so the athletes can run faster times. Are we going to disallow a qualifying performance that came after a 3 hour weather delay (when there is no thunder)?
I've seen distance races get moved up 6 hours or moved back 6 hours due to high temperatures. This is VERY frequent.
How do we know they didn't decide 3 days prior to change the time of the 4x4 (once they saw the entries and they were the only team) but just never changed the schedule online? There is no requirement to change the online schedule.
I believe they were sitting at #5 in the qualifying list on Saturday morning. The coaches never thought they’d get bumped out of the top 12. A school has 72 hours to file an anonymous complaint after a race. The race was Saturday so the school that filed the complaint had until Tuesday to do so. Which is what happened. Mount was notified on Tuesday night during their trip to Nationals.

Yeah and D3 never changed the rules so it's still allowable in D3. Let the 4x4 race Nationals and then change the rule over the summer.
If D3 had done away with Last Chance meets, Mount Union’s 4x4 team would have qualified for Nationals. Hopefully D3 changes the rules and stops doing Last Chance meets. The only violation to the running of the race per the NCAA was the 10 minute between races rule.

I feel the coach at Mount Union is very competent. He was just named the Coach of the year for the Great Lakes Region of the USTFCCCA. My daughter had many choices of places (D2 & D3) to further her education and run track, and I am very happy that she chose Mount Union. She is receiving a Grade A education and is running track for a coach that has over 100 athletes that would walk through fire for him. (Unlike some coaches that the athletes would throw into the fire.) As I stated before, I believe the only infraction that the NCAA found in the women’s 4x4 time was that there was more than 10 minutes between the last event run and the 4x4 (Article 23 of the rule book). I believe they did not find anything unethical.

Based on the video the time appears legit so the question is whether or not they followed the rules about hosting a meet and whether that was legitimate. Interesting question...
And here’s the Pièce de Résistance: no one else was in the room where it happened, the room where it happened, the room where it happened 👀
