That really isn't a comparison. First, we're in an era where time matters. If it was top 3 no matter what, then no one would care.

In football- they get to stop every 5 seconds or so and rest for about 40 seconds. Then, they actually stop playing completely while another group of 11 is playing (and stopping and resting). THEN- they ALL get to go into a cool locker room and rest up and rehydrate and talk things over.

I don't know if you've run a marathon (unless maybe you're a Hobby Jogger who walks and eats and stops at water stops and and drinks your water slowly) but you are running at a pace that is very close your threshold hoping to make it to the finish.

I agree with you and to make it even more lucrative for the athletes it would be nice if USATF matched the prize money the locals gave or provided the prize money and had the local committee add to it.

This is one of two or maybe three times these guys can run a marathon- they should be compensated pretty far back.

I think it's because time matters. OT's have been in hot weather. If the team was the top 3 across the line no matter what, no one would care.

It's different now and slow times by runners without the standards could be disastrous.

I remember it happened once- we had one Olympics in recent history where we had one runner. Maybe for both men and women because the winners had what was the B standard. The ones with the A standard couldn't go.

I guess the only reason I disagree with you is that this shouldn't be an issue. It should start earlier. Most major marathons start at 9 am.

They could start this at 8 or 9 no problem.

2000 Olympics- we had one runner, Rod DeHaven, he had the B standard. It was 85* in Pittsburgh that day.

That was a disaster for the US. And that was just an A (you get up to 3) and B (you get only 1) standard.

The opportunity for the standard exists in the US at races like Chicago. The problem may be that the standard is a bit lower than it could be due to lax testing for east African athletes. Likely dopers should be tested right and left instead of a few times a year.

You're right on all accounts, but I like the old system better. I think bringing in more runners is better for the sport.

I would like to see a three tier system where they have a VERY tough standard that lets more than 3 per country then the A and B older system.

I like going into the trials know that the top 3 will make it.

The Pros should be clever enough to train for the conditions they'll be racing in. If they don't run then it just leaves the door open for someone better prepared.

How did you feel after your 70+ degree marathon? Oh and by the way, the 70+temp is at the start of the race, which means the finishing temp would be near 80.

I'm guessing you've NEVER run a marathon at these temps, yet alone it being the Olympic trials. If by a miracle you have competed in a marathon at these temps, you either DNF'd, walked, or was carried off.
