How does a night in a hospital bed run up to $15k? This is Pentagon-style accounting here. There are no services or goods being provided in that amount.
I suppose they're making up for people who didn't pay anything, but that doesn't make it any less of a scam.
I'm so happy for you that you haven't had to stay in an ICU recently. My child has several times in the past year and half and it was a lot more than $15k/night.
$100k is unlikely to cover a week long ICU stay for MLR, even with a cash discount.
I was in hospital recently and spent about 3 days there. The room itself was relatively cheap and I had a super nice corner suite. For 3 days they charged me $4,000 total for the room and another $25,000 for tests/other stuff. That is how they get you - They kept giving me tests which I don't even think I needed. Fortunately, I only had to pay $1,000.
She looks jaundiced (or horrible bronzer), her hair is stringy and something is off with her voice. It might be dentures, another warning sign. I've watched a lot of "Emergency!" and "Quincy, M.E.," so I'm basically a medical expert.
She looks like she has some nerve damage on the left side of her face. My guess is from damage from a face lift. Women’s hair thins after menopause, especially women (athletes) with higher testosterone. This is why many senior women cut their hair short and perm it… to make it look thicker. I know 55 y.o. women who are on monoxil for balding. The alternative is HRT.
As a teenage competitor, she was putting an insane amount of force into her hip joints. She had double hip replacements at a young age maybe partly due to her elite athletics. She is also 5’ 9” and had 4 babies, which loosens up the hips during pregnancy. She had dysplasia which can be hereditary, this other stuff maybe sped up the deterioration.
I’m sorry she’s in the ICU fighting for her life.
The baffling issues are 1. why she didn’t shell out for health insurance like the rest of us, and 2. why her family started a go fund me page. If they got her to the ICU and the hospital said, “We will have to deplete all her assets” and the family freaked I would say, “this is exactly why we all need at least catastrophic insurance.”
For 20 years she was making serious money. Big money. And her husband, their divorce was 2018, was making decent money as a real estate developer. What are her kids doing? Why did Mary Lou not have insurance? If she was making no money she could have gotten Obamacare. What happened to all those assets?

I have seen over the past few years 1 million dollar plus crypto losers. Divorce often are very expensive. As I stated in my first post, 1/2 million dollars to 4 million dollars is enough money to give some a taste of the good life, but the money can go fast.
She did not endear herself to many due to how she behaved during the Larry Nassar investigation and trial. She did not come out in support of the abused athletes. Instead she supported the shady business of USA Gymnastics to try and sweep it under the rug. She also lobbied Congress against passing a bill to protect athletes from sexual abuse. This is her true legacy.
Her daughters should post a follow up to Instagram showing a) the bill they received from the hospital for their mother’s care and b) the check they wrote to the hospital for said care. Every dollar raised through the fundraiser should go towards this.
Otherwise, I’m concerned they might be tempted to take a little bit or more of the donated funds for their own use.

Tempted? It's written in stone. Grifters grifting off of mom's preventable misfortune.
She lives in Texas and Texas' republican governor declined to be part of Obama care which would have provided her with insurance. Guess what? Texans continue to vote for the republican governor. Trite but true, we make our bed, we have to lie in it.

She couldn't get Obama care. Last I checked, the republican governor of Texas refused to sign up Texas, because it's Obama and liberal socialism don'tcha know... They continue to vote these people into power not realizing that one day they too may need. You get what you vote for. I have little sympathy.

Felt so strongly about your political views that you had to say basically the same thing twice...four minutes apart. We get it, your sympathy only extends to those who agree with you politically.

Why would you be concerned? Did you contribute to their fund?

This is an excellent example how when the opposing party makes a completely reasonable statement, you counter it by ignoring the point and create some BS to shift the focus. Perch well played but he owns you!

She could have bought an ACA policy, but my guess is that it would have been unsubsidized and very expensive due to her income, and she chose to roll the dice.
Obamacare does not "provide" her with insurance -- she has to pay for it, it was available to her, but she chose not to buy it.

This is just wrong. She could get an ACA plan but likely would receive no premium credit.

Is she on a respirator? Once on respirator, flip of a coin odds if one leaves hospital alive. If M L R lives through this, maybe she will tell us her decision making regarding health insurance.
In 2020, I spent 2.5 weeks in the ICU after being 5150’ed with steroid psychosis from cancer treatment before anyone knew that I was allergic.
That hospital bill was $350k. My medical bills for that first year after diagnosis was well over $1M. Each weekly bag of chemo was $15k. Stem cell translate was $500k. Each pill I take every morning is $1k.
f you have the balls to go uninsured, know you could easily be ruined financially overnight. I always grumbled about health insurance until I couldn’t survive without it.
I have a good job that pays me over $250k per year, but it hurts sometimes to think about how that’s a drop in the bucket compared to what it costs every year to keep me alive.
