Yes, it is still a poor country, but has gone from among the poorest in the world to a low middle income country and it has a massive middle class of hundreds of millions of people. To get a sense for their values and abilities, look around you in this country. Indian immigrants have the highest income in the U.S. and dominate in categories like SAT, grades, and violin. They have a very strong work ethic, very strong family values, and very strong community. India (add in Pakistan, since it was part of historical India) also has some of the oldest culture in the world. For example, I visited a partially rebuilt 5,000 year old civilization in Pakistan when I was there.
