If Gonzales is to believed, then the course is 125 meters over 3 miles. In the end it should not matter. Reading all the comments all they have done is further cemented that so many come to this race due to the ability to have what is arguably a false time. It is a super fast course. Flat as can be, on surfaces that have little slowing effect on a runner.
Any course that changes from year to year are not courses that true times should be based upon. Use the classics that are always the same, the only way to get true year to year performance comparisons. If they can lock in a course that never changes, is exactly the same each year then you can have a comparison.
What exactly is wrong with kids wanting a fast 3 mile PR? In track season they are able to get fast 1 mile and 2 mile PR‘s aren’t they?
