Trades do not belong to poor people. In fact, one of the trends in the suburb where i live is that middle class and higher young people are taking up trades. Many of them are not the least bit precarious and make a lot of sense in the labor market.

I went to Emory because the chemistry department has an excellent reputation and I knew that I wanted to go to medical school and eventually be a surgeon. I also wanted the diversity that Emory offered. Many would argue that it isn’t all that diverse but when I was there I encountered a lot of kids from varying backgrounds - some from uber wealthy backgrounds, others not so much. Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked.
We are comfortable but a guy in my neighborhood owns the largest HVAC company in the area. He has mostly large industrial clients but they serve just about everyone. I have no doubt that he makes a lot more money than I do and I am one of the partners in my practice.
