Take a look at the all time 800/1500 list. We live in a world where a barely 20 year old Chinese runner ran 3:50 30 years ago based on nothing but. Where there are world records that go back to the 1980s based on PEDs. Or where Houlihan ran 3:55. PEDs are ultra effective. Any good college runner would pull 3:59 with steroids, epo and a fast race.
I have rarely seen such a negative reaction to a supposedly great accomplishment. People are repulsed. Describe it as noise if you want, but when the almost universal reaction is disgust and understandable cynicism, that registers. But followers of the sport are not "decision makers" who know better? Because the sport is in such good health and propering so much. I would say pot meet kettle.
Is your entire life, your entire existence, just coming on these Wiley threads and totally trash the young lady? Is that how you get your jollies? You are on these threads 24/7 and you seem to have no other life. Do you run? Do you have a GF (LOL)? Do you have ANY life besides trashing the young lady in these threads? Just really sad.
Something sure seemed to click in 2021 when she went from running 27 for 200/57 for 400 to all of a sudden 2:04 for 800....but then in the Fall managed a bunch of 18:00-19:00 efforts for 5K XC races. Then in 2022 got back to 2:04 along with the 4:26, and a 10:27 for 3200. So no incredible endurance, nor incredible 200/400 speed but very good 800/1600?
I am neutral as to her doping status, but in a sport and an event (w1500) where everyone lauds Kipyegon as the uncontested GOAT, despite being from the most doping-positives country in history, I will suspend disbelief and say let AW compete at the very top that her results allow and be subjected to the same testing protocol as any top pro. If they are doping her let's give them enough proverbial rope to hang themselves. Until then we just have to grin and bear it, as we do with many other suspect athletes, especially sprinters.
Good thread. I've been thinking about this since her 3:59. There's no reason for Wiley not to get the wild card. The noise around here doesn't translate and attach where it matters. Numerous posters here are far too fond of their noise. Somehow they believe cynicism on Letsrun and some frantic replies on Instagram equate to defining and nullifying.
Meanwhile it doesn't even register. The decision makers are focusing on talent and upside. Why in heck would anybody take the dullard approach of rewarding mid career established also-rans with the precious wild cards?
You can love her or hate her, but Wiley is easily the most intriguing 1500m runner in the US. As a track fan, do I truly care more about Hiltz, Mcgee, or Sinclaire running the Diamond league final over Wiley. The answer is hell no.
Not just the race itself, but her post race interview would be far more interesting, especially if Jonathan Gault is at the meet. She makes headlines because of her story and the times she’s running at age 19.

this... EXCEPT... they aren't "suspect athletes" at the international level - they ARE ALL microdosing/maxicycling and things we haven't even heard of yet because they just came up with them and still keeping them under wraps... there is NO CHANCE that anyone toeing a line at a diamond league event, and especially the finals, is what anyone would call "clean" (except peter bol, he's 100% clean)... is especially ridiculous on the female side, the effects are so pronounced and immediate, no one could be competitive at that level without some not-so-secret-sauce. it is laughable to act like wiley is going to show up to a diamond league final and be the UNCLEAN LEPER in a stadium of squeaky non-dopers... do we really know the situation in her H.S. days?? We ALL KNOW the pro-game is filthy and is NEVER GOING TO BE CLEAN - EVER - all the testing and banning and finger pointing functions as nothing more than a speed governor so we aren't back to Benjo and Flojo and Ma's Mo... i am 100% with posters who would like to keep HS and NCAA clean, but C'MON MAN!!

No one should be hating Addy Wiley. Other people, definitely, but she's just a kid.
This is correct. Which is why DL race organizers are so indifferent to the surrounding scandal. They simply do not care if the sport is dirty or not. Complaints about doping to them are just noise. Their only goal is to sell tickets. Like all promoters. But it is also why the sport is doomed to niche status.
But whether pro race organizers are blase or not, race fans, while they will suspend disbelief to a degree, are not keen on having a doping scandal rubbed in their faces. Followers of the sport are not fools. And doing it in college to break college records is a serious red line. Hence the critical reaction.

I don’t think we know what her true 400m would have been in high school. In one meet that she ran 57.xx for 400m, she also ran the 4x400 relay, the 1600m and the 3200m. I suspect she could run much faster going all out without other races. In the Fall, I read she played soccer and got to cross country races when she could, so I don’t know if we saw her true potential there as well. Obviously, she is her best now as a middle distance runner.

Yep. I see this all the time on letrsun. Somebody refers to an event that an athlete ran once or twice all year, or not fresh, and then presents the figure as if that was the peak performance.
I'm not buying that Jakob's 800 meter ceiling is 1:46x because he did that in one race, a couple of years back, nor would I think that Addy Wiley was a 57x 400 meter runner in high school. That seems highly unlikely if she is averaging sub-59 for 2 laps, just one year out. Was probably a 55 runner back then, and obviously faster than that now.

I don't see doubles on April 13 and March 20 when the 27.x 200 times were run.
May 7 shows a very slow 1600 and very slow 800 along with the 58.58 400
April 16 shows 4:51 mile along with the 57.80 400
Clearly she is now faster than 27/57 in order to run 1:57. But my basic point was a lot changed between March and June, 2021

Which is why they kept inviting Caster Semenya to run in women's races, long after everyone knew that Semenya is actually a biological male. Why? It sold tickets.
But while things like that sell tickets, it's not good for the sport.

Those 400m times are slower than I would have thought to get to 2:04. Looks like she was averaging around 2:09, 2:10 during that period.
I can see where people were surprised by the 4:26 record because the 400m / 800m times were not that fast.
