She sang "Born in the USA" when she scored in the 2011 World Cup.
Yes, the song is anti-american, but she didn't know and she sang as if it was pro-american.

Most fans don't care if she is gay.
She brings her politics to work and has never let her play (which was top notch years ago) lead the way. Her wife probably has the same views as her, but Sue Bird (another one who played until near 40) is about her game.
I agree with some (not all) of her stances and would support her more if she protested on her own time like the rest of us (try pulling political activism at work).
At worst, many fans see a narcissist and at best, they wonder if playing soccer (and not making statements) is foremost on her mind.
The pre-game video with the women walking on the field the day before showed Megan leading the team on the field. Yes, they had sharp uniforms, but also a lot of swagger. What did they do in this tournament to project this image? Humility would have been better. I am not so sure she is the leader the team needs.
Oh, and the over-the-top behavior also makes a lot of money, a fact not lost on the fans.
