We will see. The college season can be interesting. The second and third place runners were well off the pace at the SEC and Regionals last year. If this is the Runninglane course, then a 16:12 is good but not great, but it depends on how the race was run. High school runners have broken 16 on this course. Did not watch either the 2022 race or this one, so cannot speak to tactics.
Valby cruised 19:17 on the 6K version of this course in Regional last year. And Hutchins did break 16 but ran tangents better.
Watch the full 6k race from the 2022 DI women's cross country South Regional. Alabama and Florida State both claimed team auto-bids while Parker Valby of Flo...
Thanks. I now recall a bit of the history on this. Somebody said she ‘cruised’ it. She may have even run faster than her coaches wanted. One of her hand signals observed during the race might have been interpreted as a quick “it’s okay, I got this”, after they told her to keep it in check.
Leading up to this race:
“Placed first of 326 runners at the Arturo Barrios Invite where she earned a mark of 18:58.2 which ranks as the third fastest 6K in Florida history and earned her SEC Women’s Runner of the Week honors… Won the women’s SEC Individual title, running at 18:25.87, the fastest 6K time in school history and the fastest time ever recorded in a 6K at a championships event…”

Starting after time stamp 15:43, a coach(?) shrugs his shoulders with palms-up, as if asking “what’s up?”. Valby returns a thumbs-up. A bit later we hear some shouting, and Valby returns some over-head hand-gesture.
"We knew Doris was good coming in. Coach Nick [Stenuf] and the whole staff has done a really good job making sure she's happy, healthy and ready to compete for us in her freshman campaign" - head coach Dan Waters afyer today's meet
How good is the question? We will see if she beats Tuohy's 15:50 course record at Piane.
I don't get it. Trotting out a bunch of pros and foreign ringers does nothing for me, for track/xc, or for graduating US High School athletes. What people want to see is the top former HSers from the past 2-4 years battling each other.
Last year was excellent. But who is going to be excited to see Doris the Pro come and dust everyone at NCAA? WHo will remember the race even 5 minutes after it ends?
I don't understand the reactions. This has been going on since Rono, UTEP w/Nyambui, Ondeike, Kipyego, Kurgat, Cheserek, Chelangat so why the outrage now.
This lady will be good, but the 14:40 was in a short road 5k, so she'll just be another competitor w/ Valby and Touhy, not a lock for the win.
There was outrage then too. This your first week with that AOL startup disc?
RunningLane will provide the live stream/commentary and will start around 7:15 AM Central on Friday, September 15th, 2023. This meet is hosted by JAX State U...

Exactly.
Not good or bad. The way it is and the way it has been.
I am sure it has happened before but the one difference I notice here is that she was recruited right out of the Kenyan pro circuit without any intervening Juco time. She was training in Kenya and running in the Kip Keino Classic earlier this year.

True, but there is no rule that all Africans must first go to juco. Many do to improve their English to college level before attempting to study at U. Competing academically in college in English is a bit tougher than ordering a cup of coffee.
Freshman Judy Kosgei, U of South Carolina, won her second race today. 22, turning 23 in the spring.
Their next race is Paul Short which should have some of the Georgetown ladies. She handily beat everyone on Furman in this latest race, including Graham who ran pretty well last year. But it is early.

Wow Kosgei ran a 15:52 5 k at Gamecock Challenge and beat the field by a minute. What is the course like? That's fast.
I couldn't find anything recent for her on world athletics.

They say that, but I took a very quick look at some of the tracks prs of some of the runners in the race and I walked away with a different thought - but maybe I did not look hard enough.
