We have merged two threads on this topic into 1 and kept the title of the longer thread. The other thread was called, "Adeline Johnson, high school senior, misses state due to biological male taking the last spot in California."
Adeline Johnson visibly gives a thumbs down. I feel so bad for her.
And for all the people saying that they should protest and not show up to the podium, this is what you compete for--a chance to stand on the podium and a chance to advance. She shouldn't have to give up her moment to protest adult failures.
I dont see a thumbs down and i dont know who adeline is
In this prospective cohort of 104 TNB youths aged 13 to 20 years, receipt of gender-affirming care, including puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones, was associated with 60% lower odds of moderate or severe depression and 73% lower odds of suicidality over a 12-month follow-up.
This study consists of sending mental health questionnaires to these youths over a period of 12 months.
So it is not in any way concerned with any physical health aspects or any sort of long-term consequences. Only the self-reported mental state of the victims during the first year of back-patting stunning-and-bravery.
Absolute garbage. If you did the same thing with people who'd just joined some other cult like Scientology I'm sure you could get an equally rosy picture.
But at least people who leave Scientology won't have lost their fertility, ability to orgasm, bone density or require life long expensive medication.
Is depression a credible problem? How is it diagnosed? What about ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, dementia etc? Do you just look at their “physical health” and dismiss their “self-reported mental state”?
The mind is a physiological entity. Doctors don’t have any trouble believing that religion (including Scientology) brings peace of mind to many many people, but sometimes medication is the only solution to the problem.
I wonder if the reaction would be greater if this runner had in fact beaten queen Sadie…
I mean “they” only beat the third place girl right? So no big deal?
I always wondered if a trans girl came out of the woodwork and beat someone like Katelyn Tuohy or Parker Valby. I feel like that would force a lot of people who were previously silent into the forefront, much like Riley Gaines had to speak up.

mind you, if Riley were a runner, we'd all know who she is. We'd have followed her career through high school and through college before she became a national symbol.
Shoutout to letsrun messageboard subject alums, Megan Kaltenbach, Katelyn Kaltenbach, Laura Cummings and more for fighting the good fight.
Female athletes, including Chapter Leader @M_Kaltenbach, are fed up with being sidelined by biological males in their sports!

Gaines has never been beaten by a transgender swimmer.

She and Thomas tied for 5th place right down to a hundredth of a second. Instead of scissors, rock and paper, the trophy was given to Thomas and Gaines received a duplicate trophy in the mail.

Opiates qua opiates or opiate of the masses. Pick your, uh, whatever.
Except for this predictable verbal urinaria, I didn’t see anyone else suggest that “everyone with ‘gender dysphoria’” is trans”. Discombobulated logic is an excuse to spew out more words, I suppose.
I doubt that I'd agree with you on much, and I even expect that you're da*n near close to morally reprehensible, but I nevertheless have a fair deal of respect for both "verbal urinaria" and "Discombobulated logic is an excuse to spew out more words ...." Makes me think you might, given the opportunity, change my mind on the former two points. Not that you'd care.
I don’t have a firm stance on this topic yet. Trying to consider all sides. Help me out.
This is a symptom / outcome. What is the philosophical structure 2 layers above this discussion that led to this outcome?
Is it a predictable outcome of postmodern philosophy - rejection of metanaratives, and perhaps even a rejection of historic standards. The timeline of PM development seems to match with a few issues we face now.
Does the issue go beyond gender assignment in sports? I’ve wondered if it will be a rejection of sports, in whole, because sports show that something / someone is better / excellent. Is the concept of better / excellence a problem for post modern thought.
I suspect better / excellence leads to a whole trail of issues that may be at odds with PM thought. If I work hard academically and that makes me better… is that an issue? Same with sports. Same with finance. The answer for the “radical” PMist may be burn it all down because it is insecure and doesn’t want to be convinced otherwise.
Not sure I believe my point above… just thinking. Throw some darts please.

This strawmanning is tiresome. Self-reported mental state at three dates during 12 months is not nothing, but it's quite far down the list in terms of importance when considering an intervention which renders the patient infertile with a complete loss of sexual function, in need of life-long medication and subject to a number of nasty side-effects.
There are almost no situations where I'd consider the patients self-reported state of mind after 12 months to - on its own - be sufficient to evaluate any treatment. Let alone ones which inevitably lead to permanent loss of function.
You're the one promoting it as all we need to establish that we have to sterilize children. Think about what it is you're promoting for a second.
trans people deserve the rights and dignity afforded to everyone in society. they should have their gender affirmed, have their pronouns respected, and be respected as people in general. what tends to be lost in this conversation is that the people these boards so furiously speak down on are real people - real minors, going through the hardest periods of their lives.
please remember that.
but, the girls who lost a state qualifying spot to a woman who has a undeniable biological advantage over her competitors are also real people, with real feelings. there needs to be a larger conversation about this at higher levels in CIF. this is a complicated issue, with no easy way out, but much of the conversation i see her are either people who simply refuse to see facts or straight-up transphobes.
these aren’t single cases of women with these types of advantages either. in a CIF section that shall go unnamed, a trans girl won 4 events at her league finals, before scratching at her section trials, i assume due to pushback from a wide variety of places. i have very little doubt that she would have made states, had she continued to compete.

She could have beaten Sadie, she just knows better. She placed exactly where she needed to be to move on. To answer your question, ABSOLUTELY it would have been a much bigger uproar if she won the race. And BTW, I am calling her "she" because it's respectful. I'm in full support of trans women, I just cannot support them competing in the female category. This is not a matter of discrimination, it's a matter of classification. We have age group classifications to make things fair, you don't have a 12 year old at the Junior Olympics racing an 8 year old. Why? Fairness and equity. I believe that's their word.
Spock said it best: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."

You can have compassion for people who are distressed with aspects of their own bodies without thinking that the best way to help them is to go along with their delusions.

I don’t judge and have an irrational faith in humanity and an involuntary affinity towards anyone who appreciates words. Even if they otherwise sound like a judgmental prick.

If only there were experienced professionals whose opinions could be consulted about the best course of treatment.
