Never appeared to be a warm person. Great runner, for what it is worth.
You'd have raced against him, right, the 72 Trials at least? Did you ever talk with him?
I recall the Drake Relays, I believe it was 1971. We were staying at the same hotel. We were coming back from dinner, it was dark. Shorter and Bachelor were headed out for a run. Next day they lapped me out of the six mile.
I think it is cool that Frank Shorter has moved to Falmouth. I started running cross-country the year after watching Frank win the 1972 Olympic Marathon and was thrilled to have him come to my hometown (grew up 1/2 mile from the finish line) in 1975 to race Bill Rodgers. That was my first road race. Now I no longer live in town, but Frank does. I also believe his son worked in Woods Hole for a short while years ago.
Boulder started not being Boulder in the early-80s, and when The Blue Note closed it was all over. Boulder, and much of the Front Range have been California Lite going on 35 years now.
I remember people talking about that even when I was there in the 70s. I have a friend who lived there for a long time who told me it was all over when the Bustop closed.
Boulder was still Boulder until about 1998-2000 and then it started fragmenting and getting overrun with transplants who didn't have the Boulder vibe.
The Boulder stopped being Boulder thing has been around for a long time but the date keeps changing. You have it as 1998-2000. Galen's Rump has it in the early 80s and people were complaining about it when I was there in the late 70s. I don't know what people in the late 60s were saying. Maybe Boulder has never been Boulder.

In my 14 hour visit I made sure to visit the Blue Note and the Broken Drum.
Are you familiar with my namesake’s curse? “People seeing the beauty of this valley will want to stay, and their staying will be the undoing of the beauty.” It’s still a lovely spot with natural beauty, and popularity breeds contempt. Human landmarks come and go, I've enjoyed great sets at Tulagi and the Outlook and the beat goes on even with those venues shuttered. It does feel like a full stop to an era when the godfather of the running scene abdicates. His noted reason for settling on Boulder, having access to an indoor track at altitude, isn't a reality for non-Buffs anymore. The roads and trails are still great yet for high performers Flag has a better setup with public access to NAU's Skydome.

What, and you missed the Dark Horse Saloon? That was Pre's favorite spot.
