Sadly, in cases like that I would have no choice but to deal with it publicly. I do not agree with recognizing same sex relationships as marriage. So no, I do not celebrate a same sex married couple. Like I said, it’s their business, and it is legal in America. That doesn’t mean that I have to agree with it, or celebrate it.
Meh. I'm surprised this is news in 2022. It's not a big deal. It would have been even 10 years ago, but not today. In hindsight, it's striking to see how much society has changed so rapidly. It's incredible to think neither Obama nor Hillary could openly support gay marriage in 2008 as it was political suicide.
Progressive activism sure has ended up in the weeds since then. Focus has completely shifted from sexual orientation to "gender identity". The magical essence of one's soul.
Nikki asks that you refer to THEM as THEY. Showing disrespect is an ugly trait. Hope you never have a kid who struggles with their gender and doesn’t agree with the one they were assigned at birth.
It's 2022.
Pretty sure it's not a problem to be gay in Cali in 2022.
Nico did not come out as trans by the way.
Also pretty sure that your gender gets assigned by nature at conception, not by a doctor at birth

Wow this has taken overhand, my post was even deleted, in my eyes not even offensive but I guess some are more sensitive. I guess this is a US problem, that if you do not use pronouns correctly you will be cancelled. Thank god I don't live there. In the 40's in Europe it was also illegal to speak of certain things and books were burned for having the wrong content, I guess this is a small yet important step towards it.
A wedding between a man and a woman is a public celebration of heterosexuality. Do you refuse to celebrate or accept the couple because it is none of your business?
I've always viewed a wedding, homosexual or heterosexual, as a celebration of a couple's love and life long commitment to each other and not as a celebration of sexuality. As something bigger than just the bedroom. Perhaps I've been looking at it wrong.
I agree. I am not required to accept or celebrate his sexuality. And I don’t. Really it is none of my business. He makes it my business because he comments about it publicly.
Calling BS on this. He posted it on Instagram. That does not make it your business. You could have noted it and moved on. You did not have to come on here and post and pretend you really didn't want to. But you did and that speaks volumes.

Don’t be pedantic. He contrasted boys with girls, not boys with men.
When you are 20, you CAN NOT say you like "boys." You just can't. You are in college ... you can not say you like boys. There are no boys in college. Boys are in high school and in middle school.
Sandy P, why are you making up lies as if we don't have is actual words? He never uses the word "boy" once in his instagram post: "I like guys, not girls." Why are you smearing Nico for something he DID NOT SAY?
If it is who he is. Of course we will think about it. And he told us it is who he is so that we would think about it. He may have a size 10 shoe or he may weigh 135 pounds but he didn't tell us those things. We think about NP when we think about him. We think about Lex and Leo when we think about him. And now we will think about his sexuality when we think about him. Those are all aspects of who he is.
I don’t think you speak for everyone. When I look at Nico, I see a guy that ran 13:11 as a 20-year old and him being gay is no more relevant to me than his shoe size or weight.
That's good you feel that way and perhaps we all should view Nico being gay as irrelevant, but it isn't and probably never will be in the near future. I followed Bernard Lagat's career since his days at WSU, I appreciated his talent and accepted him no matter what kit he wore, WSU, Nike or USA, but it never escaped me that his place of birth was Kenya. There are gay people I have known for many years; I don't treat them any differently than anyone else, but I am always mindful that they are gay. The reality is, Nico is now the runner who is openly gay (period) I'm not saying that to suggest it is bad thing, but it is a thing.

I read his IG post yesterday and am about 95% certain it said "boys." Any chance he edited it to say "guys" after he got some feedback?

Nico coming out will make a very real difference in the lives of hundreds of young runners. The "I don't care" crowd can be as cynical as they want, but the reality is there are runners all over the country to whom this matters a great deal.
Can't say I'm familiar with this guy but good for him. Hopefully he serves as an example to other young athletes in a similar position as the world we live in (and the sport by extension) can be extremely bigoted. I remember that was one of the reasons Olympic and World Champion Kerron Clement gave for only coming out after retirement.

I guess it would be news if he competed for BYU
..............or Liberty University and a number of other so called "Christian" schools.
