So let us say Jakob were to run a fairly low 3:26 and Jon asks Jakob about the world record and what does Jakob think about it. Jakob says come again. Jon then says there are questions about the world record and Jakob says what kind of question is that and he says that is not me (questioning it). That question is so rude, says Jakob and he walks away. People might wonder why Jon is asking the question. There is a reason of course but what exactly is the reason? I have a guess…
Wow. With so much going on at Worlds we have 5 pages on a thread started by someone with the screen name "Rojo the clown".
This thread is for the haters! (I'll put the link for you to sign up to the Supporters Club below).
It's a perfectly reasonable question to ask. Asking a question does not imply the person who is #2 is dirty, it is implying person #1 is dirty.
When Randy Barnes had the shot put record, I'm pretty sure Crouser was asked what he thought about it.
Now you may think right after she won it isn't the time to ask it, but this is the 1 time when athletes have to talk to the media and now for the first time ever it is 1. Flojo 2. Shericka on the all-time 200 list.
Jonathan's goal isn't to be chummy with the athletes. His goal isn't to be antagonistic either. But in the course of Worlds where he asks hundreds of questions to athletes, if a few don't like the question he asked or are uncomfortable answering, then I think he's doing his job. If Jon went a whole Worlds and never asked a question that he was uncomfortable himself asking, I'd argue he wasn't doing his job. "Tell us about your race" only gets us so far.
OP here! 1.) Was it a "reasonable question to ask," considering the time/place/circumstance and how it was done? Any reasonable person seeing this will conclude that this was only done to stir sh!t up and manufacture controversary, taking away the glory of the moment away from her. He didn't even have the guts to outright ask her, instead cowardly attempting to bait her into saying the current WR is doped ("What do you make of the current WR. Do you believe in that time?") during a brief "stop and talk to the press" moment not even an hour after her championship. Maybe if this would be fine during a long form interview, but not here as Flo Jo being a theoretical doper is not relevant or material to what had just happened. Based on the 99% of the fan response and 100% athlete's reactions, it's pretty clear that the overwhelming opinion is that this was disrespectful to her, which is only adds the "clownish" reputation of the staff and owners of this website.
2.) Randy Barnes was caught and received a lifetime ban. Flo Jo never tested positive or was convicted of doping, let alone formally charged. Do you see the difference between the two here? Based on the facts, she is just as guilty as your girl Paula is.
3.) If this website is concerned about the legitimacy of the a record, perhaps you guys should revisit your attitudes toward Shelby Houlihan, someone who was actually convicted of doping and done so convincingly, despite any apologetic, hypocritical, nonsense "questions" you guys pull out of your butts.
"Shericka! You just ran the second fastest 200 meters in history. Do you think that you can take down FloJo's mythic 21.34 this season?"
If she answers, "Not this year." or "I don't know. That is sooo fast..." or something to that effect, then you can follow up with, "Why do you think that the record has stood for over three decades?".
I appreciate you standing by your boy, Weldon. But when your site already faces an uphill climb because of its reputation with athletes, perhaps a bit more thought and tact should go into your queries?

I don't speak for them. I don't endorse the defence of Houlihan here but I think the question to Jackson is legitimate. Athletes (like Flojo) will dope without testing positive.
Your false beliefs are why intelligent people like me don't get the clot shots and you do.
You merely conform to the delusions that are characteristic of most sports fans. It is easy to be approved of by those who know as little as you do.
The other question he might have asked is how did she manage to drop 0.6s off her PB in a year. That is an astronomical improvement in a sprinter over this distance. It would be like Lyles going from 19.5 to sub-19 in a year.

She dropped .24 last year and .36 this year. This stuff is easy to follow, so why do you guys insist on making stuff up.

Do you think the format and timing could have been better? It's a legitimate question, but it did put Jackson in a really challenging position, and I feel, she doesn't deserve to be challenged just minutes after such an incredible performance.
I’m new to this MB and I’m baffled by the venom directed towards this website and I suspect that all the Haters here are from the Club of Never Has Been Bums…
I’ve come across the types who yell at refs during their child’s games, claim to know more than anyone else about a sport they have little or no experience in and almost always they are adults now who never were much of an athlete because they lacked the talent and the discipline and it’s a symptom of your unsatisfactory life.
I suggest that you should appreciate and respect the website and the 3 men who cover T&F, XC and running better than any other outfit in America. I love their honesty, knowledge and experience and my love of T&F is enhanced by Let’s Run.
I couldn't agree more with this. LetsRun is how I (and, I expect, a significant amount of the people here) first got into following running and how I keep up with what's currently going on in the running world. It's nowhere near a perfect site, but I think all the hatred is unhelpful and disappointing. A clear case of biting the hand that feeds you. I for one appreciate this site and would be sad if the Brojos & Gault stopped doing what they do.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A dreadful online message board with annoying pop up ads and endless conspiracy theory thread is how you first got into following running?

I agree. No one is asking you to stick to asine, over-used questions like "what does it mean to represent the U.S. on home soil, but there is also no need to play a game of 'gotcha' with foreign athletes in the mix zone (I made a similar point about this pertaining to the Ethiopian silver medalist in the women's steeple which was deleted although that is neither here nor there). Also, this sort of questioning antagonizes the athletes (I realize that you are not intending to do so). Furthermore, it casts a negative light on American sports journalists in the eyes of these athletes, creating a level of distrust or even animosity between the media and those athletes which is unfair to your colleagues (most of whom are not there to ask such probing questions) as well as to the athletes themselves, of course.
Why such a contrast in attitude and behavior from Gault and LRC towards Jackson versus Houlihan?
I don't speak for them. I don't endorse the defence of Houlihan here but I think the question to Jackson is legitimate. Athletes (like Flojo) will dope without testing positive.
So you have absolutely no opinion on why they defend Houlihan to the hilt despite her positive test, conviction and lost appeals?
Yet make ugly insinuations about a an un convicted Jamaican runner?
It wasn't a stupid question.Too many in the athletics community are willfully participating in a public delusion.
It takes guts to expose and question the narrative. Good on Jonathan for giving her an opportunity to free herself from the public delusion. Too bad she didn't have the guts.
You sound like and Evangelical Christian who pities any person who doesn't accept Jesus as the true Lord and Savior. Gault just made and evangelical ass out of himself.
Why such a contrast in attitude and behavior from Gault and LRC towards Jackson versus Houlihan?
What on earth are you talking about? Gault obviously wasn't accusing Jackson of doping, I have no idea how you could possibly come to that conclusion. It would be like someone asking Shannon Rowbury if she thinks she's the true AR holder, and then you thinking that somehow implied that Rowbury was on roids.
I suppose you could say the contrast between attitude Jackson vs Houlihan is that they have only discussed Houlihan with regards to doping.
Man, if you were going to ask a drama farming question that would piss all of Jamaica, track and field athletes, and track Twitter off, you could at least have asked “so why don’t you and Shelly-Ann like Elaine?”

Are you Gault’s mom or Brojos mom?
they are a joke to the real T&F world. Gault is worse than a high school sports writer but only got the jo. Because he worked for free and now low pay.

you don’t know anything
yeah you really are new here because it is pretty much accepted by readers, posters, and T&F/ road athletes of all persuasions that Let'sRun has a lot of real faults but it also serves a useful and impactful role in the running community nonetheless
Well it may not have been a polite question, but nevertheless I guarantee this is what people are thinking. It is pretty much acknowledged that Flojo was doping to the gills. It is incredibly naive to think that another athlete can approach or exceed her record without being similarly doped up. Even where an athlete never tests positive that we know of, the ability to match or beat other doping athletes is a clear indication of doping.
And let's be blunt. The Jamaican team is doped to the gills and has been for years. It is one thing if it produced a couple of supposed "freak athletes" like Bolt (although thinking he was clean is equally naive; look at how many of his main competitors were caught). But we are supposed to believe that a nation with about 2.5 million people can produce multiple gold medal caliber sprinters year after year, that it can naturally sweep the 100 and almost sweep the 200, etc? I mean, please. Of course Jamaica is not alone. Look how many US sprinters have been caught. In my mind anyone who wins the 100 or 200 has to be a prime doping suspect because no one is winning it clean anymore. But the Flojo example shows the difference between having the full doping green light and having at least some semblance of a functional anti-doping agency.
In Jamaica, everyone goes into sprinting, or at furthest the 800. There is no serious xc or distance running. You can do field, but that is it. For instance, the Jamaican record in the marathon of 216 is 38 years old. Their top 5k guy was an NCAA runner who was fast enough to compete in some lower level international meets, but not make worlds or the olympics. They have just enough distance running talent to crush international Caribbean meets, but not enough to foster even ncaa level competition. For instance, 1559 won the Jamaican MENS 5k at their national championship this year, and 6th was over 18. Even the 800 wasn't much faster than a typical hs state meet in the US.

Is this post for real? Did you actually sit down and type out this crazy?
I don't speak for them. I don't endorse the defence of Houlihan here but I think the question to Jackson is legitimate. Athletes (like Flojo) will dope without testing positive.

Nothing in that makes you uncomfortable?
Are you a bit dense? I just said I don't endorse the defense of Houlihan. I also happen to think most top runners are doping and tests don't catch them. Nothing about that makes me uncomfortable.
The other question he might have asked is how did she manage to drop 0.6s off her PB in a year. That is an astronomical improvement in a sprinter over this distance. It would be like Lyles going from 19.5 to sub-19 in a year.

We are only half way through this year. So, yeah - she has carved 0.6 off her her previous best in a little over a year. In her mid-twenties. So how does she do that? She wasn't training when she was running 22x? It is still like Lyles running 18.9.
No one will sit down and talk to LRC while they flock to the Citius house for their live show. While they are not perfect, I am enjoying what Chavez and Merber are doing because it is a celebration of the sport and we really need that now. They even call themselves the “Today Show” of track. It’s fun and refreshing compared to the LRC daily show full of ludicrous hot takes from Rojo while Gault and Weldon try to talk him down.
I appreciate good journalism but LRC is just becoming horribly cynical while looking both old and tired. There is a way to get at truth but “gotcha” questions in the mixed zone is not the way. You guys look like jerks and further cement your poor reputation, especially with women athletes. Good luck getting an actual long form interview with anyone based on this nonsense. The athletes, their agents, and the power brokers of this sport know who you are.
Citius is softball questions and Kyle Merber talking about “that one time” him and an athlete hung out together. Maybe there’s a place for it but there’s also a place for a site that asks the tough questions.
also when Letsrun does longer interviews on the podcast they are very respectful
