So if the team is out doing a 6M easy run how exactly should the coach be coaching? I am interested to hear what you think they should be doing with that time.
Part of coaching is keeping the appropriate coach/athlete distance. Easy long runs for athletes, whether in HS or college should be a time for ATHLETE bonding. It's not a time for a coach to get a run in. My correct view on this will always have some detractors because there will be selfish coaches who want to get a run in and justify it ("coaching") by running with the team, and SOME athletes don't mind it and even like it. It's still not appropriate or ideal.
It can be both. You aren't going to run with every athlete every day. You also don't need to run with them every day but it can be occasionally. There doesn't need to be a hard rule either way. Coaches that deal in absolute rules like this are the bad ones that hate their jobs.

No. It can't be. Too much familiarity. There needs to be a clear line between coach and athlete, and joining athletes for ANY training at all is inappropriate. Your comment about "absolute rules" is ridiculous. There are TONS of rules that are absolute that a coach should not do. It's bad for HS coaches and college coaches to train in any fashion with athletes. At the HS level, the potential optics is worse as the kids are mostly minors. All you need is one accusation of inappropriate behavior, and then when someone says, "he ran with the athletes all the time," it just solidifies the point that the coach wanted to be around the kids all the time. Not good. You are dead wrong about this. If a coach doesn't like his job because there's an "absolute rule" that he shouldn't run with the athletes, then he shouldn't be a coach.
You haven't the slightest idea what you are talking about. It's obvious you haven't really coached. You were an assistant for someone that had this rule so you think it was the only way.
Small D1 program. Our coach runs our workouts with us. Not just easy days or long runs, but joins in with a group during tempo runs and workouts. It's not all the time, but becoming more frequent. Does anyone else have this? Maybe I'm over thinking it, but I find myself not being fully coached. I heard from some of the older guys he will enter races as well and race the team. I really don't want to race my coach.... does anyone have experience with this? suggestions?
I've had coaches run workouts, usually on trails, rarely on track.
It's not usual, but is not necessarily a problem - depends on whether they can still run the workout as they otherwise could/should, e.g. call splits, adjust paces/groups, etc.
I ran at a prep school in Richmond Va. We had a guy win Kinney Nationals I think in ‘82- Charles Alexander- he ended up at Stanford. Anyways our coach was schooled in Lydiard and ran all our runs with us - he smoked like a chimney but ran a 2:35 marathon and competed in the JFK 50 multiple times- anything over 5k , he would be able to dust most of the team

It's obvious from many, many posts that Flagpole believes that his way is the only way.

Nope. I was the Director and Head Distance Coach. Sorry. You're wrong.

I find it laughable that he claims to be a social liberal and a fiscal conservative, but makes strong stances like this. Hypocritical.
That's ridiculous. My stance is not anti-liberal. Adhering to appropriate behavior isn't a conservative value...I submit that lately it's the opposite.

No, you liberals say anything goes. You have to lie in the bed you have made. Don't try to backpedal on this one.

You are an idiot. We say "anything goes?" Who hurt you? You need DEEP therapy.
Disclaimer: I’m a high school coach not college so maybe it’s a little different but what do coaches even do on runs if they aren’t running with the team? What a waste of time and opportunities to actually coach! Running with the kids is the most time that I have to actually coach them. Standing at the track with a stopwatch is poor coaching, all the kids have a watch now anyways. I’m amazed that a coach wouldn’t be out there with the kids. The only valid argument I’ve read here is it can get in the way of team dynamics, which I agree with. We have about 3-4 different ability level groups so I try to run with a different one everyday, so each kid doesn’t have me hovering around too often. I could see how that would be different in college as kids are closer in ability level.
What are you going to do when you're in your late 50's and you struggle to even run with the slower girls? I guess you could bike alone side them so you can continue to micromanage every aspect of their practice.
I think that running with the team is something that should be rare, and never in a track workout situation. Imagine how uncomfortable for a female runner to have her much older male coach out there on her long runs. Can't talk about boys, do you think she'll even feel comfortable enough to fart, or have to step into the woods for a pee? These are things that are sooo basic to running and you're making even that uncomfortable.
Don't be a control freak and don't rob those kids of the joy of going on a group run together.
Farting and peeing is all you've got after reading some of the above posts? I sure hope you're not a coach!

Nobody hurt me. I just call a spade a spade, unlike you. You paint with a very broad brush on this topic, and others have pointed out where it is quite okay for a coach to run with his athletes. Give it up. You are wrong.

just examples of things that happen on a run, that would make a girl uncomfortable. Turn it around, when you run with your girls team do you fart or just whip it out and hit the bushes for a pee break?

Nope. I'm right.
I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible that you may be mistaken.
