Wait, what? That's exactly the point. Every time a period comes where the masks go, something arises that brings them right back. This has happened so many times now that we're either going to have to say 'enough is enough' or be in a perpetual state of masks coming back forever.

That is the correct way to handle a pandemic. When cases go up, restrict to mitigate impact. When cases go down, ease restrictions. This is the standard public health playbook for a virus like this.

In that case, it's a blatant lie to say that it's based on "empirical data" because it doesn't reflect actual, measured data. Do they think just using numbers, whether simulated or modeled, makes something empirical?

With covid here to stay, this sounds awful. But at least you're admitting that you're good with a forever approach. And, of course, this is vague enough that it's at the whim of whomever is in charge in your area, which is super cool.

Our friend thinks a 1% death rate for COVID is acceptable, and we shouldn't keep trying to mitigate it. I've just asked him to state it clearly.

Are you insinuating that car crashes are fatal 1% of the time? and if they were, you wouldn't care, and it should be written off as the cost of driving?

Thanks for asking. If some people still are afraid of the virus, they can stay home and/or wear an N95 mask. If others are not afraid of the virus, they can live their lives. It's not my responsibility to reduce transmission of a mild disease for which there are already several vaccines and therapeutics.
