Chuck Moser has dominated his age group for years in the DC, VA, MD area. I think Chuck is over 50 now but looks 40. I haven't seen him since I left the VA area several years ago but in 2004 he ran the Army 10 miler in 55 high or 56 and he was in his 50s as I recall.

Alan Webb. He's going bald, so I count that as the mark of being a master.
Hey! That's uncalled for. I'm 34 and would love to have a beautiful head of hair like Alan.

He's won like 1000 races...gotta be good, right?
He races all the time and wins a lot of small races. There are many guys in his age group in the NOVA area who are faster. Jim Hage immediately comes to mind.
Is Peter Sherry 40 yet?
Rather than list all of the top masters in MN, I'll just direct you here:

Thanks to Jack Moran of the MN Running Data Center for keeping track.
PA Female
Doreen McCoubrie age 43
Philly Marathon 2004 2:47:31
Freihofers 2005 17:46 4th masters
Twin Cities 2005 2:50:05 3rd masters female
With extreme bias (knowing these folk), I'll add these entries from the state of Colorado:
Patty Murray (just 40) just ran 34:53@Tufts 10k, which makes her probably #2 behind the impossibly good Colleen DeRuek. Masters career looks very promising.
Steve Gallegos (50) ran an indoors world record 1:59.9 for 800m, and regularly runs in the 4:10's for 1500. Performed consistently at a world class level for the last 4 years or so in middle distances.

You need to change these, Victoria Crisp is from TN. Don't know who Bill Allen or Mac Allen are but they are not from MA.
for 40's women in MA i think Simonetta Piergentili needs to be considered, 1/2 marathon in 1:20, marathon in 2:49
50's men in MA-John Barbour is the guy. 1:16 1/2 marathon and 16:49 5K (on a hot day-and not the fastest course), both at NE USATF Championship races.

sorry, i was agreeing with you. another poster listed all of the master men from excelsior . . . some of the guys you referred to as needing to come off the list. the only guy from california on the excelsior team who should be on the list is dan nelson.
i guess we are looking for current runners so i'd have to object to one in particular who was listed for california: wes ashford, i believe, is no longer running. take him off...
my pics for cal...based on win/loss records, most recent major wins and consistency.
top three...in order
road: danny martinez, pete magill, and james sheremeta
xc: danny martinez, pete magill, and brian spangenberg
track: pete magill, david olds, and rich burns
overall...danny martinez, #1 in cal.
In the state of Texas, without a doubt (since Sean Wade is still 39) William Moore of Dallas is the king. Check this out in 2005: 800 meters: 2:02, Marathon 2:33 and you can assume everything else between is awesome as well. Dr. Moore is about 42-43.

Brian Harshman's a good fit but get me outta there -- I've never beaten Brian head-to-head at any distance at any time, going back to high school. And Anselm Lebourne is better than either of us right now.
Hey now, wait a minute... While yes, there are a number of Excelsior runners on my previous list, I put them there because they're dang good.
Tim O'Rourke (American Age Group Recordholder 50K and dang, he just ran a 1:48:57 30K at 47 for 7th overall)
Jim Gorman (2003-2004, 55-59) and Don Paul (2000, 2002, 2003) have both been multiple year honorable mentions in Running Times Masters of the Year. (Compaq 10K -- Don Paul, 50, San Francisco, CA 34:21 (he also holds an unvalidated 50K road record from 1982 - 2:50:55)
Lloyd Stephenson was USATF's 2002 Age Group Master of the Year and ranked #1 45-49 in Running Times 2000 and 2002
Shirley Matson (not Excelsior) holds pretty much every American age group record.
I'm shocked and outraged that you don't believe me!

relax, dude. this is a thread about "the best", not "dang good". while those guys are respectable, they're not the best.
