Athing Mu 4:16.06 Today!!!

I think maybe we talk past each other, but the point really is that Mu is a true unicorn. If you go down the top 20 list in the 400, either NCAA or us, no one but Mu has/will even put up a single open 1500 result in 2021, similarly you won't see any open 400 results for the top milers.

Just the fact that Mu had the guts/curiosity to enter an open 1500, even fun early season duel meet, earns her tremendous respect. Heck a 4:30 result and a 5th place would have been positive.

The 4:16 was just amazingly good. It shows real potential at 1500, but I'm under no illusion she should move up from 400/800 - just impressed with her endurance.

The last remotely similar college runner was senior Roesler, who regularly ran 52 splits on 4x400, 2 minute 800s, and was occasionally coerced to take one for the team, in a down year for milers at Oregon, to anchor a dmr in 4:3X. Difference is she never posted open times in the 400 and 1500 since she was good, but not championship caliber in those events. Yet her amazing range was hyped and she did walk away with the Bowerman!

Freshman Mu is performing better than Senior Roesler.

You are correct that it would be a bad dream for them to run 4:16 because nearly all 1:58 women run much faster than 4:16.

And you can't hold it against the girl that she is already a 1:58, 50 runner. That makes no sense and you know it. Mary Decker ran a 2:02 as a 14 year old and only managed a 4:41 1600. Do you think people were begging her to stay away from the 1500?

No. She is a sprinter, not an 800 runner. It woukd be like her running 2:05 for 800.

53-1:58-4:00 is much faster than 50-1:58-4:16.

You just hit the nail on the head here, if Syd is a sprinter, and Athing is an 800 runner, then why does Athing beat Syd at 400m?

I was a distance runner but I ran 11.5 in the 100 in high school which was faster than anyone in my conference. I was still a distance runner and I would have gotten killed at state in the 100. Mu is a 400/800 runner who can beat nearly every woman in the NCAA in the 1500 but she would get killed on a national and world level.

Right now, probably. But who knows about the future? She is a big-time talent and obviously a hell of a competitor judging by her results so far.

Everyone agrees she's a world class 400 800-meter Runner.

It's not news that a world-class 400m 800-meter Runner can run a decent 1500 m

The whole point of this thread is that it's some amazing thing that she's also fast at 1500 m

And it's been explained again and again you would expect someone who's fast at 800m to be at least decent at 1500 m

She's been running this distance 1500 m for at least five or six years now

She used to do AAU meets at 1500 M like 5 or 6 years ago

And she would run this distance occasionally in high school

This is just training to try to make her a better 800m Runner

This is like a Bizarro world were a couple of posters keep trying to spin this as some unbelievable occurrence. And then like five or six people keep combating them with mountains of facts that this is just what you would expect. But they keep going on and on. It's like arguing with flat-earthers

no not mad, just not enthralled by mundane expected occurrences. It's not exceptional. No matter how many times or ways you try to spin it it's nothing more than a good time, or what would be expected for a world-class level Runner with her history.

getting sleepy, she is 2nd female to run 50, 1:58, 4:16 on earth and the 1st is a biologically male global medal winner, ho hum, mundane, I'm out, zzzzzzzzz...
