For all you older runners, were you not young once? Did you not try to run fast then? That was the time to do it. Now you look as if you are trying to prove something that doesn’t matter anymore.
I'm not sure what you think we are trying prove, and a what point that might or might not matter.
I'm 64, and have been training and racing for 50 years. I continue as 1) I still love to compete - I competed in my age group as a kid, and now I compete in my age group as a master; 2) I love the process, the challenge of using my experience and knowledge to train as effectively as I can; 3) I enjoy the knowledge that I can still cover, say 10 miles, comfortably to get home if I do something like drop a car off for service; 4) as a side effect, this all motivates me to stay in shape and take care of my health in a way I wouldn't otherwise have done.
I have thought about at what point competition might be silly, but then I look at the average local 5k. I was still winning a good share of them in my 50s, and even now, I'm generally going to be in the top 10. So, taking age out of it - if I'm finishing in the top 5% of all runners in 200 runner race, and if I'm being pathetic and wasting my time, should everyone else, including all the younger people behind me also quit? Take out High School, College or Pro athletes, the rest of us are all just running and racing for recreation whether it's a 14:20 or 24:20 5k.
