Most PHD's couldn't even change the oil in their car. or perform mundane tasks that rednecks do every day.......If there was an apocalyptic event where survival was difficult they would be the first to die..

Is this inanity really all you got? Most phds can easily figure out how to change the oil in their car. Most people even with just any college degree and/or a white collar job don’t change their own oil because there are economically less privileged people willing to do that measly labor. I also don’t clean my own house because it’s not enjoyable and a worthwhile use of my time.
If there were an apocalyptic event, believe me, smarter people, especially with phds, will be way ahead of you. The pandemic is a good mild example.

What is your PHD in...Transgender Studies?
No, you stupid generalizer. That’s not mathy enough a subject to be interesting. And mathematical maturity has nothing to do with your frog-in-the-well world neatly sliced into Democrats and Republicans.
But you can rest assured in your confidence in your survival abilities in the imagined hypothetical risk of an apocalyptic event where the fastest oil changers have the greatest chance of survival and procreation.
Historically underserved groups snd white male people from failed homes
There is no statistically significant difference between the average or median mathematical ability between boys and girls. Boys have more variance however, which means that the smartest boys can be expected to be smarter than the smartest girls and the dumbest boys can be expected to be dumber than the dumbest girls.
All that said, girls are on average doing better than boys in school including in math, but that’s more a socio-cultural artifact rather than one of innate ability.

Smarter people of course, but I doubt that those with PhDs would do "especially" better. In an actual apocalypse in the traditional sense, survival skills and the ability to work with others would almost certainly be more important than a PhD on your wall. The gap between dumb people and smart people, versus those select few with PhDs, would be a much more important gap to be on the right side of.
Some people are just so bored by it that it doesn't hold their attention.
That was me in high school. I knew I would never need any of that sh!t in my day-to-day life, and it turns out: I was right.
Little bit of a self fulfilling prophecy there huh. That aside I disagree with this post in general. “Intelligence” is in the eye of the beholder, entirely situational. Show me a math wiz and I’ll show you a guy who can’t even hold a conversation with his own friends.

Entirely false. I went to college with a guy who had his Ph.D. in math 8 1/2 years after starting his freshman year of high school--and wouldn't have taken that long, except he was kind of a screw-off: took Japanese and apiary and Sanskrit, for instance, just to keep from getting bored. He always said that one should major in math because it involved the least work. His legend was established early on, when in his first year at college he took a math course that was mostly populated by upperclassmen and grad students: On the first exam, the second-highest grade in the course was a 37, and he got a 78.
I can’t resist. Math is short for mathematics which is plural. But math sounds singular and in England is called maths instead of math. So, there is no right or wrong. Math could be considered singular or plural depending upon your English teacher.
Sorry Mr. Letting The Days Go By, but the word Mathematics is singular. It would be correct to say Mathematics is my favorite subject, and incorrect to say Mathematics are my favorite subject. Touché.
Actually, it doesn't matter if Math is singular or plural, the phrase itself which you originally picked up on -"Math Skills" - is plural so "show" should be used, not "shows. You would also say "Math skills are essential", not "Math skills is essential", the plural verb "are" being in agreement with the plural noun "skills".
Anyone with a pulse can do well in undergrad level economics courses, which are mostly conceptual with some high school level algebra thrown in. Only a small fraction of those students have the ability to step up to PhD level economics, which is highly mathematical.
Same goes for finance. A reasonably bright person can do well in undergrad level finance courses, but high level financial modeling is beyond most people's abilities.
Any science student can learn physics formulas and plug number into equations, but people who understand the math that underlies physics on a level necessary to actually innovate are ridiculously brilliant.
Basically any field become exponentially more difficult when real math is involved. Because the vast majority of people suck at math.
People who are good at math are also dumb. They just blindly accept hours of studying and repetition to be good at a subject that is only applicable to few career pathways. I think people who are great at math are more readily able to follow rules and do as their told without much push back. People who suck at math lack the discipline to sit down and learn it. Math is easy if you spend the time doing it.
People who are really good at math are usually not as creative or artistic or musical (and maybe athletic)
so, musicians, artists, designers, and perhaps athletes. These are usually in the famous crowd who are earning money at a different scale than, say, a brilliant MIT mathematics professor.
