    Pretty much did that. Ran my second Olympic Trials marathon with mediocre success. Time to move on. That was pretty much my approach to life. Still challenge myself, and consider the disappointments part of life.

    Do you regret getting divorced, or that you married that person in the first place? I’ve always wondered if anyone ever admits they wish they hadn’t divorced and had stayed married and kept working at it, or just accepted being unhappily married.

    Most people say, “oh divorce sucks but I’m better off now”. However, most people who “gut out” a bad/unhappy marriage tell me it was worth it, because they got to spend every holiday with their kids/grandkids and didn’t take the financial hit of divorce

    Right, a branch with hardcore discipline/conformity culture (USMC, Army, Navy) probably would have been a bad fit for me. That might have been part of my mom's motivation to pump the mental brakes. I don't wonder about military life, just feel I would have benefited from doing something meaningful outside of an academic environment for a few years prior to college to help me with making better decisions and dealing with some adversity without a net. I feel I was really sheltered before I left home and it had some negative unintended consequences.
