Finally got around to reading this. While the story is true, it doesn't address the most direct way that rich kids have a huge edge in college admissions.
I recently attended a talk given by one of the nation's top college admissions consultants. He flat out told us that most colleges prefer rich kids. The reason is simple: Rich kids can afford to pay more in tuition.
College tuition today is completely based on what you are able to pay. The "sticker" price is sky high. If you can't afford to pay full price, then the college provides you with merit-based or need-based aid to make up the difference. It's really just a discount.
They don't have to give rich kids any discount. So the school makes a lot more money by letting in the rich kid.
