How he handles his loss will have some impact on what happens to him. He has been an ugly stain on our history, and putting him in jail will indeed be quite embarrassing for the country, even if necessary to bring closure. With his ego, he may pull a Lance Armstrong and try to remain in the spotlight with his arrogance. This will give Rs cover to finally attack him after losing. If he loses bigly, I would think they won't want him haunting them and preventing them from rebuilding.
If Trump loses in Nov, we'll likely have to deal with the fact that he can run again in 2024. His followers likely won't give up the following until he steps away which I doubt he will. In order to rid themselves of Trump, the Republicans will have to emphatically move away from him. They can't simply ignore him or he'll be in the middle of things again in 2024 assuming he's healthy.

That said, there actually is a functioning vaccine now. It exists and is being used on humans and it works. The big tests could fail but it seems likely there will be a vaccine 4-6 months from now.
