I agree that Wallace let him get away with a number of falsehoods but it is also like the old Oakland Raiders in football who operated with a "they can't call a penalty on every play" attitude. Wallace couldn't question everything so he picked his spots otherwise the focus ends up on the interviewer for badgering even if he isn't badgering.

However, you're right and in the context of a debate in the future, it is clear that Trump cannot participate in a debate which is not nearly completely controlled by FoxNews. If it is a more liberal moderator he'll end up looking like a fool although he'll whine and complain about the unfairness of it all.

It's troubling that he struggled so bigly with a FOX interviewer who threw only softballs his way. I know it's FOX, but Wallace probably figured trump might just storm off if he actually pressed him. This must have been a nice slap of reality on trump's face. How is he going to perform at a debate with some tougher questions and moderators not letting him off the hook?

He's not going to debate Biden. He had to against Hillary because back then he really had nothing to lose and most hadn't caught on to his incompetence yet. But now he can go out there and really make an even bigger fool out of himself. Think about it... no matter how bad he does his main supporters aren't going to drop him, so why should be put himself through the unnecessary embarrassment?

Not if he's challenged. His only hope is that Biden comes across worse than him but I don't see that happening. The only thing which might happen is the country finally wakes up and asks for the next two up.

Debating really is easy when you can lie so shamelessly and never really get called on it. Debate moderators generally don't consider it their job to fact check the debaters in real time.

Trump has a "talent" for lying. An extraordinary ability to lie about things that are completely obvious lies without batting an eye.

I don't think he is scared of debates. And I do think he will do them if he thinks they help his chances.

The problem is trump has to try to fool a lot more people now because he's down significantly, but many know he's a fraud. I maintain that his priority is his ego. If he thinks he's going down he will protect his ego at all costs. Best to bellyache and say the debates are rigged and cower out of them to retain that base for his future entertainment network. He'll only debate of he thinks he has a chance.

Keep in mind that in 2016 if it wasn't for Bannon he wouldn't have debated HRC. He almost pulled out last min. He has no Bannons around him anymore, only yes-men. The moment he decides he won't debate they will just play along and tell him it's a brilliant idea.

The Republican convention that Trump is insisting on having has the potential to be a fiasco dwarfing his Tulsa debacle. Besides the obvious virus concern, there are security, funding and planning issues (some related to the virus) and the police don't really think it will or should happen.

Chitwood said he didn’t believe the event should be held and said the RNC is struggling to do the impossible.

“There’s a fear of telling him no because anyone who tells the president no, it’s like, off with their heads,” Chitwood said.

I guess it's that old question...does trump know he is lying? Does trump know how much the nation hates him? Does he know his presidency has been a failure?

I think he believes he is a stable genius who has been one of the best presidents ever, but the media has brought him down.

I think his aides give him lies and massaged data to make him feel like a success...so trump won't fire them.

If he truly believes he is a good president, he will be eager to get that message out to the world. And the debates are the perfect place to do it.

Well, Trump has a history of refusing to pay security bills for his events. That is unless the security bills are for events at his properties. Then the billings are as high as possible (bigly exaggerated), and paid without question.

I don't understand how having a campaign rally in the midst of a global pandemic that is wrecking our economy and costing tens of thousands of lives didn't immediately discount the toddler as a presidential candidate. Then again, I thought "grab them by the pu$$y" would be the end of it, but here we are.

If there are debates I would say they will have fact checkers in real time. The tv screens will be covered in statements that what Trump is saying is false, all the while he is speaking. Nothing he says will have any credibility.

But in an ideal world they'd do the debate on say Tuesday night, and then broadcast it on Wednesday night after a neutral band of factcheckers went over it for a day. And give some sort of Green - yellow - red spectrum of truth evaluation to what the candidates say.

But it won't rise to that level because he's not going to answer any questions with any substance. Every response will be the usual superlative work soup with distractions meant to entertain the mouth breathers at home. Trump doesn't debate, he just barks nonsense. He got by in 2016 with that, but 4 years later there is a different expectation for him.

the more interesting question will be how much fact checking Joe does. It's very tricky to do, since everything is on a spectrum and often not 100% false or 100% true. Biden could screw up one fact check, and the Rs could then say 'Hah! dont' listen to Joe's factchecks - he's all wrong on them.'

The moderators won't factcheck - no way. Not their job.

Lol, yeah.. I really don't think he's going to be up for the task. It's going to be pure ridicule and even FOX will have a hard time spinning. Biden has the leverage by being up so much, so the structure of debates will not change one bit. Trump is in no position to make any demands, so if he has to go in the ring he's going to be punching his own belly blindly.
