This is just really odd to me..why it wouldn't raise any red flags..new runner takes off at blazing speed and isn't seen until after the 13.1 point, and is walking..
It makes absolutely no sense at all. Since it's been determined that his 10k time is bogus, and his real marathon PR is 3:07, 5-5:30 mile pace is very, very fast for him. I'd be surprised if he could maintain that for one mile.
Yet his listed HM pr says he can run 5:15 pace for 13.1 miles...hmmmm....

No, you definitely have to do it consecutively. That's kind of the entire point. They mention at least once in the blog that they take pains to pick up exactly where they left off the previous day. If you didn't have to run the miles consecutively, why wouldn't you just run a few days in California, fly to New York, and do the rest on a flat loop?

It is NOT a trans continental run if you do not have your feet on the ground for every foot of the crossing. This is not a race (or record) for going from the west coast of America to the east coast of America and traveling at least 2,776 miles. No, it is a Trans Continental crossing. Every foot of the continent has to be touched by his feet during the crossing. If he misses a half mile he would have to go back and do that half mile then continue from there. You can't just drive around when ever you want and then at the end show you ran over 2,776 miles so you now have the record.
Actually you can. As long as you go from LA to NY, covering a minimum distance on foot you are fine and dandy. Like it or not that's the criteria for a solo trans-con cross. If its a race with other rules fine, other rules will apply. But this is A to B covering a minimum of X distance on foot.
Yeah that's a ridiculous thing to suggest. Where does Rob say he's aiming for 3000?? If he's going for fastest crossing, adding another 250miles is not the best idea...
I think you're misinterpreting this. Perhaps 2776 is a minimum distance to ensure you've run from one side to the other, but it's not a trans continent crossing if you're not running the whole thing.

Someone posted the current record holder's name early on and of course we don't know if it was legit. Unfortunately for Rob, it's 2016 and there's cheap technology that can ensure there are no doubts someone completes the whole thing.
