Are most people against the protests but afraid to say it and will this silent majority vote to re-elect Trump in November?
Seems like they are even afraid to tell pollsters they like Trump.
The polling data is actually in the article. People support "peaceful protests" (82%), they don't support violent protests (22%), and they don't support "defund the police" (64%).
I don't think any of these are particularly surprising. "Defund the police" as a slogan, as has been discussed in this thread, is problematic even for some who would agree with the concept of shifting some of the police role to a social services role.
Support for protests is very strong and most liberals are uncomfortable with the idea of violent protest and destruction of property on general principles and because it is counterproductive to the movement.
The article is mostly right wing spin on things few would disagree with, but at it's core, there is a real hazard for the Democrats they risk losing centrist votes if they get pulled too far left and the Republicans and Fox will, of course try to paint the party as radical leftist regardless of reality. The polls suggest they haven't been particularly successful thus far in making Biden look like the riskier choice.
